Trade & FA 2023-24: HOU Targeting Mikal Bridges again!| Mitchell is LAL #1 Target

Its interesting.  I agree that Green is a better fit on this team (although we don't have a lot of offensive creation outside of Luka and Kyrie) but I think there is a reasonably good chance that Hardy is a more valuable asset after next season than Green.

We already have the guy we want to take us to the backend 5 pick of the draft, he just needs to get up to speed so he can take us beyond that in the playoffs. Capela gives him the model to aspire to (and beyond) all while helping the team get deeper in the playoffs NOW. Whether that is by helping us get a higher seed so as to get HCA and face lesser teams, or that AND in the playoffs themselves (he'll be useful for a round or 2 at least if for nothing else than being a minutes eater, but there are the Looneys/other bigs out there that he can stop in any round).

That playoff atmosphere was too much for JB his first go around. How much better would it be for Lively to get those playoff jitters out of the way for the couple years while he's coming off the bench? He gets to see how much the intensity increases the deeper the team gets. In 2 years, he can hit the ground running and not look back.

Once Cap's contract expires he can sign with us as a bench big to back Lively up and be just fine in that position on that appropriate salary in 26-27 (the season leading up to the draft where your belief rests).

Excellent points.  If we're going to move that kind of asset, I'd rather do it for someone who's still valuable then, like J.Allen.

Random thought, but I think Jimmy Butler would have to be my favorite fantasy 3rd star. I actually don't mind the Heat despite the history, but I am rooting for their downfall. It would certainly be an all in move with his age, but it could be worth it.

I‘m rooting for the downfall of the Milwaukee Bucks. There‘s a certain player that only cares about winning and not about the shiny lights of LA or NY that has only two years left on his contract.

ATL in: Holmes, 2 2nds (provided by HOU), 2 2nds (provided by DAL).

DAL in: Capela, KPJ.

HOU in: THJ.

Doncic/Exum
Irving/Hardy
Green/DJJ
Williams/Kleber
Capela/Powell

Lively/O-Max/Curry as 11-12th man.
We just paid a whole lot of money to a guy that went 9-29 (31%) on FG and 3-20 (15%) 3-pt% in both our win or go home elimination games last couple of playoffs. SMH

Only downside to that would be the PR of trading for KPJ, but i don't care if he's waived pretty much immediately .
Otherwise I'm a huge fan. Gives us that stopgap center, preserves our major assets, and it opens up minutes for Hardy and/or OMax. That's everything we need in a trade

I think we should release Luka, Kyrie, THJ, Powell, and Maxi immediately.

Think how many minutes it would open up for our youngsters!  It would certainly improve our team!

So you're against what's effectively a 2 for 1 deal where we get back a set starter for 2 bench guys?
The rotations make a ton more sense to me if we can do that

Not necessarily.

Just poking fun at the “addition by subtraction” crowd.

I think getting Allen would be a much better choice to help the team now. I however also think he’ll cost a good deal more than Cap to acquire (at least 1 more FRP worth in value, if not more). Then in 2 years after we’ve spent the assets to obtain him and Lively is ready to start, we’ve put ourselves in the same position Atl finds themselves in now.

It’s a pretty good position to be in, however, there is some doubt about being able to sell 1 or the other for appropriate compensation (is 1 of them demanding out possibly or other things that lower value), and does that at least replenish the value we used to get Allen.

In all, I’d also rather have the potential “problems” of acquiring Allen. The other thing is, Allen as far as reports go, is staying put. At least for now, while Cap still seems very much up for grabs.

This is the main thing. One is available, one isn't.

I'd rather have Jokic or Giannis than either of them, but it's not a buffet.

This one would put us in the luxury tax if I'm not mistaken.

Holmes is a negative #24 pick.  THJ is approximately -$6m.  That tandem alone would have to be the 27FRP and taking back approximately $6m in dead money just to offset their negative value.

You can argue that THJ's negative value = KPJ's negative value.  I think I'd rather THJ, however, given he gives us shooting.  KPJ does not.  IMO, Exum will be our 3rd ballhandler.

So take out HOU...

DAL - Capela
ATL - J.Green, Holmes, 27FRP

I don't do that deal.  IMO, Holmes is going to be impossible to move.

Let's say it takes THJ, 27FRP, and J.Green (or Hardy) for J.Allen

TDL 2026 we have an expiring 27yo J.Allen and a 22yo Lively with a year left on his contract.  That puts us in the drivers seat to resign one of them long term and move one of them for the roster's most pressing need at that time.  Kinda a nice place to be.

...and this matches Kyrie's contract.  $62.9m in expiring with Kyrie and J.Allen.

I'm not sure that's even possible.  Are we able to trade two first-round picks at this time?  I thought we were not.

Also, the Cavaliers would say no to this deal.  They have Donovan Mitchell, Isaac Okoro, Caris Levert and Max Strus on the wings.  They don't need two more solid wings.  They may have wanted THJ last summer but they have since signed Strus and he and THJ are very similar prototypes.  Isaac Okoro is also similar to Josh Green-  stronger but a little less athletic.

They also probably won't be able to extend or re-sign both Okoro and Josh Green who are both in the final year of their contracts.  That's already a very expensive roster.

Additionally, this would leave the Mavericks with two gaping holes on the wings.  Williams and DJJ are both better at the 4.  Who would play SF for us?

I think you've created the rare fantasy trade where both teams would quickly say no to the deal.

I like Jarrett Allen as well but what you suggest doesn't make sense from either team's perspective.

That's only 1 FRP, the 2027.

Touche.  I forgot about the Strus signing.  I can't believe they resigned Levert for what they signed him for.  Terrible signing, but yes they'd want no part of my proposal.  I think it's equal value, just need a 3rd team with the assets CLE would want.

Luka is our starting PSF (point small forward).  Luka more than fulfills everything a starting SF does, plus more.  This gives us the flexibility to conceptionally put Luka at SF, or go big and have Luka at PG.  Losing Green means we are losing a SG, but most importantly, our POA on defense.  I would rather have a bigger lineup with Luka, an actual SF (OG type), and a G (Kyrie).

I still say if Green is going to command ~$20m/yr, it's time to move him, using Green, THJ, and 27FRP for an OG/Eason type SF, a bigger defender with some semblance of an offensive game.

Tari Eason would be perfect here.  Hopefully, OMax becomes our Tari Eason  My other hope is the Mavericks stop trading picks and start drafting more players.  I'd like us to find our own elite role players in the draft.  It's difficult to draft stars when you're not in the lottery.  We don't need stars though.  We need good role players.  Those are usually available outside the top 14 picks.
