Trade & FA 2023-24: HOU Targeting Mikal Bridges again!| Mitchell is LAL #1 Target

No, a Reggie replacement.  48 minutes of either Green or Thybulle on the ball (and some minutes of both in at the same time).  Add in the eventual growth from OMax and you are solid through two needs….

Creator:  Luka, Irving, Hardy

Wing Defender:  Green, Thybulle, OMax

Now to filling out the big rotation.

Thanks for the tip. Kind of feels like other things working behind the scenes.

No way to know. At some point, if you want an RFA at X dollars and have the cap ability to offer the deal, you have to suck it up and take your shot, and see what happens.

Again, I don’t hate the idea of Thybulle here, despite the glaring fact that if his shooting doesn’t benefit from the “playing with Luka” effect, he’s not going to be playable when things matter. I think it’s possible he figures that out here, sure.

Please, just don’t let it be for the full MLE, or even close, really.

Well then I might point out that we gave up a 2022 1st round pick and got a player in return that will probably earn less than $5M next year, so the expectations for a 1st round pick should be as low as that.  Shy

Wow...interesting. Probably a pretty good chance Portland matches, right?

But it tells me they must have a trade for a bigger body, right? And it may not be likely that either Hardaway or Bullock is on the roster to begin the year.

Once we take on Ben Simmons contract as part of the Dame trade our all Aussie lineup will be complete.

Kyrie/Exum/Green/Thybulle/Simmons

I think the smoke about a deal involving Hardaway and PJ Washington is real.

I think it will be the full MLE.

Apples vs cucumbers.  Known 26th pick vs. unprotected first beyond the end of Luka and Kyrie’s contracts?  C’Mon Man.

I doubt Portland matches the full MLE.

It wouldn’t shock me, but I sure hope you’re wrong!

Agreed. Only a contender would match that type of bread on that player, and they’d bitch and moan while doing it. Portland wouldn’t dare match that deal. The Mavs shouldn’t offer it, tbh.

Man I hope so because otherwise it just means we failed on the two other better fitting RFA options (and this one is not a slam dunk).

If the Mavericks are able to add PJ Washington to the roster after the draft night they had and the better-than-expected Kyrie contract, it will be difficult for me to dislike this off-season.

You started it by comparing the most volatile injury prone-madman in the whole league to "normal" superstars.

There is a reason he´s now on a 126M deal instead of a 252M deal. And based on pure rational economic principles  Kyrie should have accepted a 60/3 Mavericks offer, cause I doubt there was a single team willing or capable of signing him for more outright. Make no mistake the Mavs gave him 126, so he´s not mad at them. Not because that was his true open market value.

At least Thybulle and PJ Washington are still relatively young.

Not sure how much I LOVE either player (same concerns as killerleft) but honestly given our history in free agency, I will probably take that haul and give this offseason a solid B.

What smoke? The trade ideas being floated in this forum?

More fun with math…

If Thybulle got the full MLE, we have a slight issue of about $300k according to Spotrac once we have a 14 man roster in place.  So, something would have to give.

The PJ cap hold is $17.4mm and they need to operate under the cap to avoid BYC (they currently have $18mm in space).  Sending THJ at $17.9 for PJ starting at $17.4 fixes our $300k issue with a dollar or two to spare.  It fixes the BYC issue on PJ and it meets the $18mm/year annual salary Stein now says PJ is seeking.

One issue, Charlotte would no longer have access to the full MLE as they would be operating under the cap.  Do we see any free agents better than THJ who are going to Charlotte this summer for $12.4mm?

IMO, the Mav’s problem is they are always negotiating from a position of weakness. We have been on the “maybe next year” train for so long that we have built up a bunch of assets that are undervalued relative to what we need/seek. Personally, I don’t see ANY scenario where we will be truly competitive with the better teams next year.

Instead of continuing this insanity (what is the saying about insanity), I prefer they get rid of the dead weight and focus on youth and projected upside, regardless of ideal fit. If that means we are slightly under resourced at a position, so be it…that’s the cost of the maybe next year mindset.

I would look for players who are younger and solid defensively but have underperformed offensively. We have seen that an advantage Luka provides is improvement on the offensive end. I believe that is an advantage that hasn’t been leveraged enough. Is it realistic to believe that defense deficient players like Curry (who I like), Wood, Bertans, etc. etc., are going to enhance their market value with the Mav’s? IMO, flipping the script is the best way for us to develop players and operate from a position of strength during the Luka years.

Could we potentially offer up the 27 pick with lottery protection that converts to multiple SRPs despite not technically owning those SRPs yet?  That is something I could talk myself into.
