Trade & FA 2023-24: HOU Targeting Mikal Bridges again!| Mitchell is LAL #1 Target

This

I feel like the Mavs already need a really strong makeup guy that is part of the core and not just a secondary player like Powell.

To go in the other direction with people like Brooks or Ayton does not seem like a wise choice.

[Wojnarowski] Timberwolves center Naz Reid has agreed on a new three-year, $42 million deal with a player option, his agents Sean Kennedy and Jeff Schwartz of @excelbasketball tell ESPN. Undrafted out of LSU, Reid had his best season with 11.5 points and 4.9 rebounds.

$14mm/per.  Might have made at least one of our half dozen backup centers more valuable.

I like Naz Reid but a little surprised at that number, especially since they already have Gobert and KAT/

I really like Reid.  If we had drafted one of the top PFs in the draft, he would have been high on my list.   I am not sure if he would have been for the Mavs though.   It is a complicated fit if you want Luka to guard the worst forward position.

Minny is going to have some interesting conversations over the next year.   What is sort of crazy is they have made some really nice moves the last several seasons with finding guys on the edges.  Kyle Anderson last year and two draft picks.   One of those picks is really raw and probably years away but he has NBA athleticism.  This year with two second rounders they left with Leonard Miller and Jaylin Clark.  I think both have a solid chance of being NBA players.

If they didn't make the franchise altering Gobert trade they would have a nice run of solid moves.   Besides that how was the play Mrs. Lincoln?

Minnesota is now spending over $90mm a year on the center position. I wonder if this means KAT is finally on the way out.

I think the Wolves are going to try their hardest to move off of Gobert, but if they can't then KAT is probably next. They're in a unique position where Ant is the guy they should build around.

Could they ship KAT off to ATL for Dejounte Murray?

Reid fits the KAT role pretty well and at a fraction of the cost. ATL has to reduce their payroll and the Murray-Young backcourt isn't working. KAT for Murray+Collins makes a lot of sense...

That's a lot money on bigs. Wonder how likely it is that they move KAT.
Reid, Anderson and McDaniels could cover the PF spot

Dillon Brooks is believed to be looking for over $12M/year in free agency, per @TheSteinLine

Too high, too low, just right?

I'd love to have him for the MLE

Seems like the FO is putting a priority on high character guys this year. I feel like I’ve heard them say multiple times that was something they liked about this year’s rookies. Based on what I’ve seen of his public persona, I don’t think Brooks fits that mold.

They'd be lucky to give away Gobert with 3-years and $131M left on his contract.  I don't think he'd return anything of value and if I were betting, they'll have to pay someone to that contract.

And they should absolutely get rid of KAT.  Delusions of grandeur is an understatement for him and I think he'll ask out of that situation before all too long, so I'd rather be ahead of the curve.

Hater. Don't you see that a first round exit with the T'Wolves is more impressive than the Nuggets championship run.

So Golden state doesn’t have the full MLE right? Can they do a sign and trade?

Kuminga’s name has been mentioned a lot in trade rumors.

GS has no way to get Wood, unless he will take minimum salary.

No MLE. Can't take a player in SNT.

To take Collins off their hands, Hunter and/or Capela should be the consolation. I still think there is a 3-team trade here with PHX that ships Collins off to them and the Mavs get their choice over Hunter or Ayton.

Edit:
Was playing around in the trade machine. I don't think there's a realistic avenue for the Mavs to get Ayton anymore much to my dismay. But there does still seem to be a 3-team trade that makes sense for everyone:

DAL- Capela+Hunter
ATL- Ayton+THJ
PHX- Collins+Bullock+McGee

PHX gets 2 starters for Ayton at positions of need plus a center. This increases their salary by ~8 mil, but they're in cap hell anyways and McGee+Bullock are flexible enough to be S/W and/or come off the books quickly.

ATL gets a starting center in return for Capela at roughly the same value, but also get well below the tax line getting off of Hunter. They replace Hunter with another shooting wing that they need. This move clears 15 mil of salary for them.

The Mavs they obviously nail down their rotations. If we expand the SAC/OKC deal, the net salary coming in is ~54 mil (21+20+12) and the net outgoing is ~52 mil (17+18+10+6). Overall an increase of 2 mil from where they used to be with Bertans

Rotations are if they can't offload Holmes (and I doubt they can)
Luka/Hardy/vet min (Dragic finally?)
Kyrie/Green/
Hunter/Pinson
Maxi/OMP/Vet min (Morris? Love?)
Capela/Lively/Holmes

Total roster salaries after the trade: ~172 mil. This is assuming Kyrie signs for his full max starting ~48 mil. If he takes a slight discount (say 40~ mil starting salary), then the Mavs avoid paying luxury tax and the 1st apron all together. If they found a way to offload Holmes (and say replace Powell at the vet min with him), then they'd be able to just squeeze out the MLE but the math is tight.

Edit 2: I've realized above is an overcomplicated trade and the Mavs can easily just cut PHX out of it and deal with ATL directly. Theoretically, THJ+Bullock+McGee is enough for Collins and either Capela or Hunter as payment. The money is largely the same and the rotations look like:

I disagree with the edit. Ayton is the primary motivation for Atlanta (secondary is moving off of Collins) when proposing this to the fans. I think this is the Value and savings that Atlanta really desires to make happen. Getting someone else to take Collins...

I also think they're highlighting the difference between this year and last. Lots of smoke pointing to guys formerly on the team were lacking the things they value highly in the rookies.

Brooks also falls in the former category.

Can you educate me? Why couldn’t they do a S&T?

Teams over Apron 1 ($172 mil) cannot use S&T to receive a player...
