The X-Factor Tim Hardaway Jr.: DAL to give long term extension?
(12-11-2019, 03:46 AM)dirkfansince1998 Wrote: THJ is not a player that can be relied on to score 15-20 points every game.

My argument against this would be, that he is a normal third guy scoring around 15 points per night. If I have a look at some other "third" guys (on offense) I find a similar patern:
Bledsoe, average for season 14,6, last 10: 6, 10, 13, 6, 2, 10, 9, 13, 11, 30, 28
Barton, average 14,2, last 10: 9, 7, 17, 5, 14, 17, 22, 15, 15, 6
Kennard, average 16,3, last 10: 14, 15, 8, 20, 21, 16, 20, 6, 9, 14
Nunn, average 15,1, last 10: 18, 14, 8, 7, 11, 15, 9, 19, 6, 21
Reddick, averga 15, last 10: 3, 15, 26, 12, 13, 16, 18, 12, 20, 26
Paul, average 16, last 10: 16, 20, 30, 4, 16, 7, 16, 20, 18, 4
Richardson, average 16,1, last 10: 9, 25, 32, 8, 28, 19, 17, 11, 7, 24

To add a bit of perspective to THJ contract. Out of the guys mentioned only CP3 is paid more. Bledsoe and Richardson are also excellent defenders.

Non of them is as streaky as THJ. THJ is at 8/23 and +2.4% rTS. Below league average efficiency in 2/3 games. Overall still a more efficient scorer than guys that are less streaky. I don´t think any player in the league can match his combination of volume, efficiency and streakiness.

The points are extremely inconsistent though. I guess I'll take the average as long as the team keeps winning like this though.

It's not like he is playing out of the flow of the team or forcing shots when it isn't falling. He is moving the ball and plays great D. So his inconsistency isn't that much of a problem.
If he would be consistent he would be a star. Right now he is an elite role player.

Also, the accumulative length of the starting 5 when THJ is the smallest guy on the floor for the Mavs is kinda ridiculous.

Time to bench him. He brings nothing to the table if his shot isn't falling.

I'm back on the trade THJ train. Dude is insanely unreliable. Seems like a great teammate, but he's always on fire or ice cold with no in between.

I have to give the thread starter credit for his idea of starting THJ.  Seems like the only way he isn't one of the worst players in the league is if he's being spoon fed catch and shoot open looks by Luka.

Curry looks like he can create his own shot.

So yeah I maintain Curry is a far better player but if Luka wont be out long, minus whale keep THJ in the starting lineup.

This is the THJ you get when he's asked to do too much. If he plays defense and shoots a respectable number on catch & shoot threes I'm ok with him as a starter. I'm even ok with an occasional ill advised foray into the lane. But the version of THJ we saw tonight is bad basketball personified. I think he got his shot blocked four times, including once that led to a clear path foul and a layup. That possession was a six point swing alone, not to mention all his other bone-headed mistakes.

He is the player who benefits the most from Luka's presence

Luka is on his way to being the next Dirk.  His gravity will attract the defenses' interest and make things easier for the other 4.  Dirk made a lot of players look better than they were and made them a lot of money when they left Dallas.

That was the idea.

Was he hot or did he play smart.

Hot. He made a number of shots I groaned at when he took them....but they went in. Smile

Just wanted to know if the premise that he needs Luka to stay within himself still holds.

He shot terribly in the previous two games.

That's how it is with THJ. We just need to contain him when he's having a rough time and feed him when he's hot. The question is guessing where the coin will flip on game day.

Josh Green is a top 5 Mavs player...

Great game. Finally had a hot night at the right time. I really don´t know what to do with him. Cannot miss or cannot hit the rim and it. Reminds me of mid 2000s Stackhouse.
Longterm it seems like Curry is way more consistent and on a better contract but the Mavs need THJs size on defense.

Curry might be more consistent but I think he also is stoppable on any given night. When hot, THJ is unstoppable.

Not really sure. I actually think that Curry is better of the dribble and can create for himself and to a lesser degree for others as well. He also scored 20+ 3x in the last 5 games.
