Trade & FA 2023-24: 76ers Believe They Have A Shot at PG13
It will be interesting to see what Grimes goes for. He has sort of regressed this year. In my limited viewing of him last year, I really thought he would be a player that almost every team would want. Maybe in the 15-18 million dollar range. Good shooter, solid height, strong, good defense, etc. I have no idea what his value is now or what type of contract he will be looking for in his next contract.

I personally hope the Mavs will use the next two weeks to determine if the size and defense we need at the 4 is currently on the roster.  I wasn't certain if Maxi would return but I'd like to see how he looks before we trade for a backup 4/5.  His previous ability to play versatile defense, defend the rim and hit open 3s would provide much of what we currently need.  I'd also like to see OMax get some minutes in every game until the trade deadline.  I would be fine with him taking some of Grant Williams minutes as an experiment.  He is probably not ready but I enjoy a surprise.

If neither of those players look ready to make positive contributions after a 2-week trial run, then I hope we'll look at a trade shortly before the deadline.  All I'm saying is give MaxiOMax a chance.

While I'm here, I'd like to give Dwight Powell a little shout out.  He has been playing really well lately.  His advanced stats now clearly show he's one of our top-6 players.  That contract looks like great value.  I think we just need a bigger PF next to him in his minutes.

Fake Trade of the Week: Gordon Hayward to the 76ers
To 76ers: Gordon Hayward
To Hornets: Marcus Morris Sr., Robert Covington, two second-round picks

I saw this online. How has Convington played in Philly? If this fake proposed trade went through, there is a good chance Convington would be bought out.

While I agree with that to extent, I don't think the Mavs will find either of those players reliably available for heavy minutes in the playoffs. Plus we need to get off the Holmes contract if we can. I would think the FO is really looking for just the right move to improve the roster... and will pull the trigger for a big if they can. It's possible no one will be available for the right price. THj's play doesn't make him easy to part with either.

Not sure how he sees Holmes as valuable, as his on-court production is limited, while both Gafford and Capela are solid centers. He then discusses Tate and mentiones him as a contract that could be moved. Another obvious contract is Landale. Both would be great from Dallas perspective, as Tate has a team option for next season and Landale is not guaranteed past this season. Meaning, Mavs would get huge flexibility to either trade them or let them go for free.

Holmes for Tate and Landale, perhaps add a second rounder or two. Tate is not big, but he plays stronger. Mavs get a wing which you can never have too many and flexibility for next season. If there is nothing better around to use Holmes contract, this would be a move it could make a lot of sense imho.

Interesting.    I really wonder what happens here with Holmes.   It feels like his time on the court is done here.   He couldn't get any playing time when we had a lot of injuries and then you had some tweet stuff.

But if we can actually get a playable piece such as Tate then we should do that yesterday.  I hope we get that lucky.

Sorry, I wasn't clear. I think those SRP would need to come from Dallas. Still interesting for me. Tate is a decent player and Landale is perfectly good for Holmes role, while we don't need to pay him next season.

I think we need to take Cuban at his word.

"at least 6'8", rebounds, and can dribble the ball". Not sure if Landale really cuts it.

I'd be interested in a Landale for Dwight swap. Although Landale has had a sub-par season thus far... he's better than Dwight.

Tate is like a smaller, dollar store version of Josh Green. He's a lesser athlete, can't shoot, and he's too small to defend anyone except guards. He's only good for bringing some energy and hustle off the bench.

Unfortunately, that is basically the only way one can favorably describe Kyle Kuzma.

It also describes Siakam, but he's clearly not an option for the Mavs. For my money, it describes Jerami Grant, although his listed height is technically one inch shorter. Still, his wingspan makes him a 7-footer, basically, and his attack the closeout game is far better than Kuzma's.

There really are very few ways the Mavs can suck the fun out of what they've accomplished since draft night, but packaging some of their precious draft capital and young players for Kyle Kuzma would do it. He's one of the most unlikable players in the league, and that's before we get into his suspect on-court play.

Of all the trade rumors that I'm reading... I like Jerami, Grimes, Landale and Sims.

G: Kyrie
G: Grimes
F: Luka
F: Jerami
C: Lively, Sims or Landale

This lineup is much improved compared to what is. Not sure who will be going out in trades for Jerami, Grimes, etc, so I've left the other backups blank.

WCJ could be real nice too but I don't know if the Mavs have enough to send out in trades for both Jerami and WCJ. Also, WCJ will be the starter, not Lively. Since Lively has been good, I'd rather upgrade starting PF than starting C.

This had me thinking about Houston and the fact we haven’t brought up Eason in a long time.

They want a backup C. They offered Powell a double digit contract last offseason. They have 2 rookies that could use some extra minutes.

Eason is a good player stuck behind a better player. He’s playing 21 mpg for them.

My trade proposal:
Tate and Eason for Powell, Green and 27

We then trade THJ to Orl who sends Fultz and a SRP to Atl who sends Capela to us

Luka/Kyrie/DJJ/Eason/Cap
Exum/Hardy/Tate/GWill/Lively

That is a solid team with 2 picks and a couple expirings and some young talent to add a starting caliber SF in the offseason.

Why do we need to get off Holmes contract now?  That will be more expensive now than in the offseason when he is an expiring contract.  His contract might also be very useful in offseason trades.  I have no interest in paying additional assets to get out from under him sooner than we need to.

Fine. The Mavs don't have to.

My point was simply what I stated. Ideally the Mavs need a ready player at the 4 and would preferably like to find a way to keep DJJ. I'm sure they'd like to make something out of Holmes, but he's out of the rotation and unhappy.

Reports are that the Mavs are shopping THJ and Holmes, so the FO doesn’t agree with you.

I'm trying to remember, but it seems like there has been recent history of Cuban saying what they are looking for, and them not ending up getting it.  In fact it seems like there has been frustration in the recent past with Cuban's habit of getting folks hopes up for something that doesn't happen.

That seems like a jump. They might just be curious what they get for that package and even be willing to pull the trigger in the right deal. That comes nowhere close to proving that they believe they must get off of Holmes now.

It doesn't (need to) mean they want to get rid at them for expiring contracts. At least my understanding was, this statement meant they are the contracts to be used as salary matching

Same rumors for Timmy and McGee that never happened.  I think recent history suggests maybe they do agree with me.  They are trying to shop him, but I don't think they are interested in paying assets to dump him.

I think the Mavs are being opportunistic, as they should be. I expect with the current market and the available assets the Mavs have they will be unable to make a big trade. Potentially they may look to make a smaller trade but not sure it moves the needle enough for what we would need to give up.
