Trade & FA 2023-24: PHX Wants Lebron+Bronny| Jazz to Shop Collins

I understand that general thinking.
1. Mavs will be in bird rights trap with every player.  YES, OF COURSE, SALARY IS ALWAYS AN ISSUE
2. Mavs will probably have to "overpay" every player. YOU LITERALLY CAN'T DO THAT - IT'S ALL ABOUT CHOICES AND PRICE/PRODUCTION NOW.
3. The key is to gather the correct players. TRUE. BUT "THE CORRECT PLAYERS" MUST NOT ONLY FIT ON THE FLOOR, BUT ALSO WORK PROPORTIONALLY WITHIN YOUR HARD CAP.

The answer is to find players at the right salary for what they bring to your team, not to just add more players who are grossly overpaid. "We already have some we overpaid" is certainly not justification for wildly overpaying again.

I do agree that OG as you see him would be a good fit, if he was the player you think he is. But I don't think he's really that level of player at all. (I think he's become idealized here as someone super special because he's become perceived as someone we can get.)

Oh yes, the Mavs should definitely make that OG trade, especially if Hardy isn’t in it. Worst case scenario is you have a year and find out he’s not actually a missing piece before you give out the big contract. That’s bad but not the end of the world, and probably won’t happen. THJ and Josh real soon are overpaid, so no loss.

So some minor story line going into the season. Jordan Poole dropped 41 on the Knicks the other day, during the game there was an eyebrow raising moment where Deni Avdija was calling for the ball open on the opposite side of the court, while Poole iso'd himself, dribbled it out, and scored. You can see Deni throw his hands up in frustration and sighs as he runs back on defense.

Now another clip surfaced of the two arguing to each other with some players trying to ignore and guys like Kuzma and Poole laughing off the argument. Perhaps Deni is ready and available, and if so, should he be a target for the bench?

Avdija is heading into restricted free agency. I don't think the Wizards are interested in that long term of a deal. This could be a prime buy low type of deal and perhaps a way to snag Gafford as the short term starting center this season.

Gafford+Avdija for Holmes+THJ+2 2nds. I don't think Gafford is worth a first. Neither is Avdija.

You think he doesn’t like playing with Poole, and WOULD like playing with Luka? And Kyrie?

Deni is a type of guy I have thought a lot about.   He fits the size requirements I am hoping for to fill our out wing rotation moving forward.  He is also a good defender.   Just not sure he will get there with his shot.    With the success Rui has had going to a new location, I wonder if there is more to Deni's game.

I just not sure if there is a trade package for Dallas.   But he would be someone who I would have interest if he could be had without including a future first.

OG is a huge upgrade from J.Green.  IMO the POA role should be from a bigger SF than a guard.  Defensively, we'd basically have 1 guard (Kyrie) and 2 SFs (Luka, OG gets the toughest assignment 1-4).

But rather than pay OG huge money and give up big assets, why not go after the next OG, someone we can get still on their rookie contract, who is not presently a huge drop off from OG?  Tari Eason.

J.Green/27FRP for Eason.

I am not convinced Eason is what you think he is, ie "the next OG."

But the bigger issue, have seen no indication he's available at all. That's a huge dead end.

Compare Eason's rookie season to OG's 3rd season and Mikal Bridges' 2nd season.

Everyone outside of the top 6 players are available.  Look at Houston's depth chart.  Eason is buried.  They're much more lacking at SG.  J.Green + 27FRP may be very enticing for them.  Would you make that trade?

I really like Eason and I wouldn’t do that trade. People continue to undervalue Josh Green.  That pick could have massive value too.

I also think that Houston is likely in no hurry to move on from Eason. If he’s as good as you (we) think he is, I’m pretty sure the team that scouted and drafted him knows it.

Look at Omax as our Eason. The best way to get guys like them, solid and good defenders without all-star level upside, is to scout and then draft them.

I used to be all about the idea of adding OG to this team and because of that found myself watching him a lot last year and I tend to agree with Gump on the idea that we overvalue him. He’s not as good as an offensive player that the hype wants you to believe.

He’s good, don’t get me wrong, and he’s better than Josh today, but Josh’s trajectory shows a much better offensive option than OG. Hell never be the defender OG is but he’ll never be a bad defender either.

I like Eason but Green/27 for Eason is wild. There’s a world where by the trade deadline that both those assets are more value than Eason by themselves.

So does Memphis go and try and get Clint Capela now that they've lost Adams for the year?

That or trade to get Valanciunas back.  He's expiring so that may make more sense.  Valanciunas

Valanciunas makes more sense to be honest.

I was looking at their contracts and it's honestly going to be hard for Memphis to package together a trade that makes sense for a middle tier center and match salary wise.

Both Clark and Adams are their mid tier contracts, but both are damaged goods. I don't think they're trying to trade Smart just after acquiring him. Morant and JJJ are pretty obviously untouchable unless it's for a bonafide superstar (and at that point this isn't just a trade for a center).

I don't think they're that interested in gutting their team either to shore up that position of need, even if they were faltering like crazy without a good rebounder. Not really sure where Memphis takes this to be honest. I suppose all it takes is 1 team that thinks Adams is all that they need and are fine waiting a year for him.

Jaden McDaniels signs a 5-year, $136 million dollar extension.  He was a solid role player last season.  He projects as an elite role player with more experience.  He will never be a star.

Other organizations don't want their talented young players to be free agents next summer regardless of restricted status.

It's like they know something that the Mavericks don't.

Happy?

Shams Charania on X: "Dallas Mavericks G/F Josh Green is finalizing a three-year, $41 million contract extension with the franchise, league sources tell @TheAthletic @Stadium. Thrilled.  I think that's one of the best values among the summer extensions.  The Mavericks organization has done really well this summer.

Define star? Is the best defender in the league a star? Cause I think that is where McDaniels is headed, if he´s not already. Plus he shot 52/40/74 from the field last year while averaging 12/4, which is slightly superior to what Jaylen Brown did in his 3rd year. Made the huge leap in year 4.

This deal a total no brainer for Minnesota.

Only headache is their cap thanks to the massive overpays of KAT and Gobert. If I´m building that team, it´s around Edwards/McDaniels first. KAT/Gobert are the tradebait.

If Gobert and especially KAT could play as well as they talk, they´d easily be a legit contender, cause they have everything else on paper.

Tha´s a great deal.

One problem: It´s not big enough for Kidd to not f*** with him. He started Justin Holiday off the waiver wire above him. Now he tried to push OMax into the S5, who is clearly not ready. Then the whole DJJ starting rumours. At less than $14M/year Kidd can still do dumb sh*t to him. Cry

Really good contract. I was hoping for no more than the GWill contract.
