I'd totally do that. His dip in fg%3pt this season could be because there was little to no point play/other scoring options. Johnson is wing who can shoot and play defense, cost controlled for 4 years. I would do it without their pick included if they eat Bertans. I think guys like Hendricks or even Whitmore could be better than Keldon and are cost controlled for 4 years. Rookie contracts are going to be a necessity if you have Luka+Kyrie eating up almost 90 mil of cap. He is signed for four more years at 74 mil total (declining deal). He scored 22ppg and is career 36 % 3 pt shooter (had a bit of a worse percentage last season). It will take a rookie several seasons to perhaps get there where he is now. I can't see Mavs declining such a deal, if it was on a table. San Antonio, on the other hand, has time. They need a solution at PG and perhaps they would be interested in one of them who are likely available at #10. They have time. But it seems like Wenby´s camp wants them to be competitive from day one on. Basically same mistake Mavs did. I think they should have a season acclimating to the league and see where they trully are. Push cap space to next season and perhaps gather some more assets for it. Personally, I would keep Johnson as part of future core. Use cap space and assets for that point guard when opportunity comes. He did add to the deal in a following tweet by adding Bertans and removing the pick going to Mavs. As for defense. I agree he is not some all nba defender, didn't mean to say that with "he can play defense". He is also not some complete negative. The tools are there and I would hope he would show more on that end in competitive environment RE: Trade & FA 2023-24: Lebron: "I got a lot to think about next year" - omahen - 05-23-2023 This is from Vecenie about Johnson Johnson led the team in scoring last season at 22 points per game and is still somehow only 23 years old. He’s a starting-caliber player with potential to be more than that, even if I worry a bit about his shooting consistency and decision-making. The good news? He’s just one of those dudes that is a constant bundle of energy. You never doubt that he’s going to bring it every night (even on nights getting sick after eating gas station barbecue). He was miscast as a No. 1 option for a large portion of the early season, and he struggled with his effectiveness. But by the end of this season, he was pressuring the rim at an incredibly high level with his attack-oriented, aggressive nature. He’s like a heat-seeking missile dropping his shoulder and looking for contact to bump and create that little bit of separation from a big. The issue with Johnson is that he’s a 6-foot-5 bowling-ball forward who doesn’t have elite length and, frankly, plays more like an undersized 4 man than a true wing. He only made 34 percent of his catch-and-shoot 3s, per Synergy. From January onward, he made just 29.7 percent from 3 and is limited as a passer. And then defensively, there are limitations at his size and build even with the energy he brings. But Johnson is useful already and will continue to get better. And almost more importantly, he’s locked in on an incredibly team-friendly contract over the next four years as the cap is set to rise. He’ll make just $74 million in that time, including just $17.5 million in 2025-26 and 2026-27 after the Spurs intelligently structured his contract with a descending value structure. https://theathletic.com/4523292/2023/05/17/victor-wembanyama-roster-fit-spurs/ RE: Trade & FA 2023-24: Lebron: "I got a lot to think about next year" - Ghost of Podkolzin - 05-23-2023 (05-23-2023, 01:59 PM)omahen Wrote: He did add to the deal in a following tweet by adding Bertans and removing the pick going to Mavs. Eek. His DefRtg is awful. Again, could be a product of being the only scorer on the team and taking time off on the defensive end. IMO, it depends on if we keep Kyrie or replace him with a defensive talent. If Kyrie stays, you can't start Luka, Kyrie, and Keldon. If Kyrie is replaced for defensive talent, ya it'd probably work. RE: Trade & FA 2023-24: Lebron: "I got a lot to think about next year" - omahen - 05-23-2023 (05-23-2023, 02:07 PM)Ghost of Podkolzin Wrote: Eek. His DefRtg is awful. His numbers are not bad previous two seasons. Move Kyrie for for an OG, J Allen, Eason, or McDaniels... ya. RE: Trade & FA 2023-24: Lebron: "I got a lot to think about next year" - ItsGoTime - 05-23-2023 (05-23-2023, 10:59 AM)Ghost of Podkolzin Wrote: What are your thoughts on compensation? My thought is that he's projecting to be an OG/Mikal Bridges, precisely what this team needs. His RebRtg of 13.4 would rank him #2 on the Mavs, only behind Wood... at the pf/sf spot which is our weakest.OG and Bridges were both starters for their teams (OG on a playoff team) while Eason is a backup on a worst in the league record team type. That makes it really hard to give him any value other than a #17 pick (if anything, he's lost value). I get why he's off the bench, but it just doesn't make things easier to evaluate when trying to make a comparison or picturing him starting here (I would think he'd have to win that spot depending on who we bring in this offseason). What would be the extra compensation? Problem is I don't have a good handle on who most of their guys are. They are targeting Harden and a PG when Green is a combo G which gives me a bit of pause as to what the direction is. However, Tate is a defensive stopper for them, Is he too much compensation? Tate and Eason for Bullock and #10? RE: Trade & FA 2023-24: Lebron: "I got a lot to think about next year" - omahen - 05-23-2023 (05-23-2023, 03:25 PM)ItsGoTime Wrote: Tate and Eason for Bullock and #10? Tate brings a lot of what Mavs need. I was proposing Tate+Garuba, I guess Eason is not that different value wise. Tate might also lose his role on Houston if they get Brooks. I actually think the value is still light in case of Garuba. I don't have any opinion about Eason. I would also want #20 from Houston. When watching SA, he always seemed like a good defender to me. I'm with you on his defense (esp hustle and the use of his bulk) being good whenever I watch him play (admittedly not much outside games against the Mavs, but I have taken the occasion to watch my other Texas teams here and there, I'm still getting over the Rockets having Harden and now they're looking to bring him back?). Him and Green flying around the court would be fun to watch. He also wouldn't have as many offensive duties here with Luka and Kyrie running things so he can take a dip in scoring while being ready to step up when one of the two goes down. I do think that trade pretty heavily favors us. Bertans, Green and #10 is probably pretty fair compensation, but then we just gave up what would hopefully be at least 2 contributors to next years team for a much higher contributor (as long as our vet min game is on point, I'm fine with it). Also there goes the thought of Green and Johnson flying all over the court. I'm flip flopping though, maybe Green is too much considering #10 is worth 3 protected picks and Johnson is close to that. |
