RE: Trade & FA 2023-24: Mavs interested in DFS, PJ, Drummond? WAS to keep Kuz? - Chicagojk - 02-05-2024

Over this past weekend, the Clippers’ purported pursuit of Washington became noted across the league. But according to various league personnel involved in these talks, Los Angeles has not had a meaningful conversation with Charlotte in quite some time about Washington. One source went so far as to describe that Clippers-Washington connection as “bad info.”

Who knows what is true.  It could be Dallas checked in on DFS but there wasn't a deal there between the two parties.   Seems like the Nets want first round picks for some of their guys.   Unless Dallas makes a three team trade, there really isn't a fit .

I believe in the Luka-effect...very much so...

I just have a hard time believing Luka can get it done with Bargain Isle players.

Kyrie is not Bargain Isle...but we acquired him based on value of trade, I assume?

What I am getting at is...I dont know if Dallas is going to ascend constantly acquiring value or Bargain Isle players.   At some point you have to put talent on the floor.

Dallas' past has suggested that they prefer to use draft assets on acquiring vets.   Maybe things are changing.  But...that approach leaves you having to be frugal(generally speaking) and only being able to acquire Bargain Isle players(generally speaking).

Luka has done wonders with many flawed players.  We are 5 or 6 years into Luka.   At what point do you start shifting from Bargain Isle to Premier Players?

PJ is the cheaper 4 with decent skills...better than our 4's have skill wise.   But again...we are relying on Luka to produce Magic if PJ come here and is a average.   By all accounts...the guy doesnt jump off the screen at anyone.   I do understand that System and fit in a System are a thing.   PJ seems to be an upgrade...but how much pressure is he putting on the needle?

Plan Powder and kicking the can down the road will lead to Luka seeking refuge.   Seems like MAYBE this summer we finally have assets to acquire someone...but there will be competition for available players.

Im rambling.   Mavs need to acquire some confident players with decent skills.  I dont like the word Alpha...but maybe it is fitting here.   Stop spending assets looking for value on the Bargain Bin and go get solid NBA players.   Mark, Nico, Adelson's...go get us a SOLID front court player with skills even if his percentages arent Luka-Perfect.

Makes sense that they’ve talked about all of them for the last few weeks and don’t like the cost for those guys. The recent reports from Stein of Kuzma wanting to stay and Wiz wanting to keep him while simultaneously hearing DAL and PJW rumors seems to suggest they’ve moved on from all three.

That leaves a few wings on the table. PJW, Deni, O’Neal and Wiggins.

Im sure I’m missing one or two.

THJ --> NYK

Grimes --> HOU

Eason + Fournier --> DAL

If you can find a way to get both Eason + Grimes, that would be much better AFAIC. You can send the 2027 1st out to do this too.

Then send Dwight Powell to the Pels for Karlo Matkovic. Maybe swap Green for Avdija, and Kyrie for Dejounte.

1-5: Dejounte, Grimes, Luka, Eason, Lively
6-10: Exum, THJ, Avdija, Kleber, Matkovic

This looks like a much more serious team, on paper at least.

I dont have perfect memory...wish I did.  Assuming the trade offs for perfect memory were satisfactory to me.

Definitely looked like a fool.

That should register now.  Cant guarantee I will get it perfect in the future.

Thanks, though.  Genuinely.

Im not smart enough with these kind of moves.

We get bigger and Portis has a 3.

What are the murmurings about Portis' defense I am reading?   Is there concern?   Or does his overall skill and size make it worth it?

Seems like we could use a big body that shoots a 3.

Yes do it! Portis for GW would be good for both teams. GW should be better playing with great defenders like Giannis and Lopez (just like he was in Boston). He will give them a more versatile forward than Portis, at least when it comes to the lineups they can play.

Depends what the Mavs have to add. I'd be shocked if they can get Portis for GW straight up.

Dallas has had exploratory conversations with Milwaukee about a trade centered around a Bobby Portis for Grant Williams swap, per
@TheSteinLine

There's a "died and gone to heaven trade" if there ever was one.

You're welcome. Not trying to be a jerk, and you don't look like a fool. Here's an easy way to remember. An aisle is a row of space, like a shopping aisle. Clean up in aisle three! An isle is an island, like the Isle of Capri.

One thing about any GWill trade is you can easily go back to the summer and look at what he cost us.  You then can add that cost to any GWill for X deal (in this case Portis).

I would assume it would be GWill plus something to get Portis which means it ends up being GWill plus something plus a 2030 pick swap.

Interesting, because I bet there’s still a connection between Rivers and Williams, so this is plausible.

I honestly don’t know much about Bobby Portis, other than he’s one of those annoying fake tough guys.

Would make a lot of sense for Dallas.  Provides size, rebounding and offense for the second unit.  He is not a good defender, and has been THJ level this year, but he makes sense where I can't think of a role for Williams right now.  Lineups with Portis and Timmy are going to really struggle defensively, but that probably wont be for more than half a season.

RE: Trade & FA 2023-24: Mavs interested in DFS, PJ, Drummond? WAS to keep Kuz? - Winter - 02-05-2024

Portis is a good rebounder and actually has a 3-point shot. I watched him at Arkansas when he was SE Conference player of the year, and then when he got in a fight with a teammate in Chicago a few years ago. His best years have been with the Bucks.

No!  Bobby Portis was a heart and soul player for Milwaukee and it used to work for them. He was never all that skilled and much of all that is gone. I’m sure Milwaukee would love to turn him into something. I hope we are not the one to get stuck with the past glory guy.
We need to use Grant Williams to get somebody much better by combining our assets or wait patiently for him to figure it out here.
