Yes we do have to focus on players like Bey, as in players that are young, might need a change of scenery, are underperforming, still have upside and might be available for cheap. I said nothing about what his strength/weaknesses overall, but you guys always want to shop in the playing-well/star window, when we are broke ass mofos. We have no capspace. We have limited player assets. We have no draft capital. We are not getting the "good" players.

Ah... Mavs will have two expiring contracts, 3 FRP and a bunch of young players in just 6 months. That is not broke. That is more than enough for a proven third best player. Mavs have two stars and a bunch of 5-8 rotation players. Mavs need top end talent, not more role players trying to put them into 3rd and 4th best players roles they can't fill. Mavs struck gold with Exum, DJJ and Lively. 3 players on cheap deals that can be part of playoff rotation. Two of them will still be on cheap deals next season. Mavs have two rookies with potential. Go for a proven talent, not mediocre players hoping they become something completely different with Mavs.

Bey doesn't fill the positional need. He would just take minutes away from Green/Exum/DJJ/Omax and a claim can be made that each of them is better or has more potential than Bey. Grimes and AJ Griffin play similar position, but at least they have years of their rookie deal left (Grimes one, Griffin 2).

“Terry Rozier to Miami is a very real possibility. And it could happen soon.”

-@GregSylvander

A couple of interesting notes about this possibility.  If the return for Charlotte is expiring Lowry, Jokic and pick(s) for Rozier, it isn't a legal deal for Charlotte.  Lots of ways to fix, but two of those could involved Dallas.

One would be adding a Hardy/Jovic swap to the deal.  Hardy fits into Charlotte's TPE and Jovic doesn't.  Gets us a guy over 6' 8" who can dribble.

Another way would be Charlotte sending out additional salary to take on Lowry/Jovic.  Richards fits into our TPE (for a second) and would make the original Miami/Charlotte deal legal.

Didn’t listen to see if this was accurate or only trade proposed. But I think this is the caliber of player Holmes would get. Not sure PJ can play any longer.

Not impressed. PJ doesn't turn us into a contender, so I wouldn't waste a SRP on him,

Yeah, me either.   I do worry that we think Holmes turns into a valuable asset as an expiring next year.   He is just a salary next year...nothing more, nothing less.   I do wish we could have seen some promise from him to maybe make him semi attractive as a trade.   Right now, it appears he is just in the league until his contract expires.   I get it though.  He was the tax to pick up another first round pick in last years draft.

Holmes and a 2nd for Tucker would be fine

Holmes and a 2nd/Hardy for Boucher

These seem like realistic possibilities. Better contracts to trade this summer

Even if Mavs would be building long term with Luka and Murray (moving on from Kyrie at some point), he might not like it. Hawks board thinks his defensive issues are because he needs to guard larger players, because Trae is on smaller ones. He would have same issue in Dallas, as long as Kyrie is here. Could fit great without Kyrie.

But, at that price... Makes me consider it big time.

Welp, I think the solution is simple... trade Kyrie for Dejounte. Especially if he is available for this cheap! Kyrie still has value. Whatever extra you get back can go towards getting upgrades at SG and especially at PF. The Mavs' current position in the table seems about right for how they're constructed, i.e., the 8th best team in the West only.

If the Rockets swap FVV for Dejounte, then the Mavericks go down to being 9th best team. Wouldn't that be nuts? The Mavs got Luka in 2018. Harden tanked the Rockets' future in 2021. Yet the Rockets could be back above the Mavs in 2024. How the turn tables turn. Sad

Chris Haynes saying teams are eyeing Robert Williams III. This would be a good value move for us. Shouldn’t cost much

Interesting move, a lot has been done this season before the TDL. Roziers is a better scorer than THJ but also on a larger deal for two more years, yet the price was expiring and protected FRP. So looks unlikely THJ could fetch a FRP.

I would definitely be for Holmes for R.Williams trade, but Holmes himself would cost 2 SRP to dump. Difficult to construct a trade that makes sense

I wonder if he is the opposite of GWill.  Looks like maybe GWill defensive metrics were propped up by Boston.  Maybe PJ is being artificially held down by Hornets team.  Hard to imagine  he would be worse than GWill right now.

Here’s what I think I know about PJ Washington:

He would instantly be one of the fastest players on the team, and his athletic profile in general would stand out on this roster in such a great way. Seriously, in a package that size, he is a weapon, athletically. A difference maker.

I don’t distrust the metrics claiming he is not a plus defender, or think they are lying, but my eyes have seen him perform as a very good defender on more than one occasion, and there is nothing in his skill set to suggest he would have any limitation on defense, whatsoever. In fact, he has the prototypical, ideal set of tools to be a defensive difference maker as a forward. I don’t think he has any history we can point to where he was disruptive as Jeremi Grant was in Denver or prior to that, but I do think the conversation about Washington’s defense is similar to the one about Grant’s. I think both players have focused on becoming more offensively skilled so that they could get paid. Now that Washington has gotten paid, like Grant, I feel the question is: Would he be interested in accepting a more glue-guy/defender role here as a bridge to WINNING. If the answer is no for either, you probably don’t want them. But if the answer is yes then you have added a difference making player. I stand by that.

PJ Washington’s off-ball game on offense is CRAZY good for a 4. There’s been so much talk of replacing THJ‘s offense, and he actually might be able to do it, because he does not need the ball to impact the game on offense. Really good, fast release. Has a variety of different solutions to get his shot off on the move… Lots of great and varied foot work. Spacing for this team would improve a ton with PJ out there instead of Grant Williams, and that is coming from someone who was excited about the positive impact Williams would have on the team’s spacing.

Anything they do is going to be a risk. That’s what roster management in professional sports is. Taking risks. PJ Washington on this new deal is a risk I would take without even the slightest hesitation, especially considering how low the price for him seems to be.

To my understanding of what’s out there, he represents the most upside the Mavs can currently afford without compromising their ability to make a big move in the near future.

The Hornets will become a team that can take on contracts for draft assets with their cap space too. With so many franchises facing second apron implications, there will be no shortage of teams needing to incentivize deals with draft picks to get off money.

Evan Sidery (@esidery)
The Suns have shown trade interest in Miles Bridges and Nick Richards, per @GeraldBourguet (https://gophnx.com/phoenix-suns-trades-2024-nba-trade-deadline/).

Phoenix has the potential to acquire both utilizing Nassir Little, an additional minimum salary, plus multiple second-round picks at their disposal.
