RE: Trade & FA 2023-24: Mavs interested in Miles Bridges? Herb Jones? - Jason Terry - 01-22-2024

I’m only interested in Kuzma if Gafford is part of the package

Mavs get: Kuzma and Gafford

Magic get: THJ

Wizards get: GWill, Green, Hardy, Gary Harris, Mavs 27 unprotected, Magic 2nds, Mavs 2nds

Wizards get 3 players 25 and under to rebuild. Plus some picks. Much better package than either OG or Siakam

Gafford/Lively
Kuzma/Maxi
DJJ/Gordon Hayward bought out
Kyrie
Luka/Exum

Good 9 man playoff rotation

RE: Trade & FA 2023-24: Mavs interested in Miles Bridges? Herb Jones? - Jason Terry - 01-22-2024

Herb Jones is interesting. New Orleans needs to cut salary, but it would be foolish to trade Jones. McCollum is the guy that should go, but it seems they view him as part of their core. Jonas according to Pels fans is who they’re trying to upgrade. He’s expiring and they’re eyeing Jarrett Allen as their ideal upgrade. They have extensions coming up for Ingram and Trey Murphy

I would give up a lot for both Herb Jones and Jonas

I like the three teams involved and I like us obtaining Gafford.  I don't think Kuzma fits what we need so I'd prefer an iteration where we either acquire Deni Advija or obtain some cap relief for next season.   We will probably need the full-MLE available this coming off-season to re-sign DJJ.  Both Advija and Gafford would probably not be obtainable for our crap assets so I'd make the following offer-

Magic get THJ

Wizards get Markelle Fultz, Richaun Holmes, two 2nd-round picks from Magic and the Mavericks 2027 first (top 10 protected) round pick.

Mavericks receive-  Daniel Gafford, Delon Wright and Johnny Davis (for salary matching purposes)

We end up with an elite center tandem and Wright as our 4th guard.

Davis' contract is guaranteed for next season but not the following.

This would bring us closer to being able to have the full MLE available this coming summer to re-sign DJJ.

They said they want 2 FRPs for Kuzma, you add Gafford and only send 1 FRP. I’m sorry to say, this would not get close to the finish line. Take out Green and swap Avdija for Kuz and I think that would be close.
Well, without looking at salaries to match that up.
Edit: take away Green or GWill

I thought it was a pretty well thinked proposal as Wizzards get 1 FRP, 4 seconds and 2 young players (plus GW). Could they see Green as a running mate for Poole? I would also hope THJ for Harris could get us a FRP and not just 2 SRP.

As for Orlando, they could sure use shooting, but I wonder how much they value their cap space next season. They will have maxish space if they don't add any salary.

May be good VALUE to you (what does Wash actually think of Green, Hardy or GWill, Gafford is young too) but all reports talk about Wash wanting actual picks, not pick equivalent players. I think they’re getting ready for a long rebuild.
Gafford also, has only been in rumors where other teams are inquiring about him. Last report from Wash side about Gafford was they wanted to keep him. That means overpay to get him, to me.

Given the reports that there is little market for Timmy, hard to see the Mavs get a first out of him, especially for an expiring contract.

I'm not sure how much value any of GWill, Green or Hardy has.  Unless somebody has a particular interest, they all seem like neutral contracts.  That makes the package significantly less than what the current asking price is, and as folks have mentioned, no reason for Wiz to be in any hurry to drop the asking price.

Seems like the ideal stance for a GM to take is:

“Nah, player X isn’t really available. Unless you make me a really strong offer.”

I like the player, but how do you see his fit?  Can he play next to Lively?  He is not much of a shooter.  He is actually terrible from midrange.  I'm skeptical you can have an optimum Luka offense with two guys on the floor that can't shoot.

I think the offer is basically best we can offer or it makes sense to offer. If that is not enough, so be it. Was gets unproteced FRP, which is better than any pick Toronto got. 4 SRP is roughly equivalent value of lottery protected FRP. As for young players, of course it all depends how the the trade partner values them. If they don't see any upside, the offer is meh. But might be they have a different opinion.

Of course Gafford was added in the deal in the proposal and personally I don't have a problem if we don't include him. It means GW or THJ are out of the deal. In a deal like this, Kuzma is the centerpiece, not Gafford. Personally, I am not enthusiastic to pay a FRP of any kind for a back-up center. Not until this becomes the last piece of the puzzle needed.

Sacramento was the other team mentioned as interested. The only young player they have is Mitchell, who is already 25 and has been pretty much meh his 3 years in the league. Huerter has 2 more years of THJ level contract and is barely playing. Barnes is meh and also has 2 years left on his deal. The only advantage Sacramento has are picks, which they can offer more than Dallas. I think Mavs offer is still better though, unless Sacramento offers more than 2 FRP.

Of course Washington may choose to rather keep Kuzma for the time being.

RE: Trade & FA 2023-24: Mavs interested in Miles Bridges? Herb Jones? - omahen - 01-22-2024

A little bit about THJ. I can understand why his value is low. THJ loves to shoot it, a lot. But, he is not terribly efficient doing it, just 36 % from three this season. He doesn't bring anything else. Several similar players are on the market.

Toronto is willing to move expiring Trent, who scores less but is a better shooter. Also much younger.
Fournier will likely be traded at some point and he might be very gettable then. He used to be THJ level player before Thibs decided to stop playing him.
Might be both Detroit and Atlanta Bogi can be had and both are probably better players than THJ.
Clarkson is also rumored to be available and he brings more than THJ to the table.

Perhaps I forgot some other options. All in all, there are plenty of shooters with iffy defense available, but there is limited use for them. Most of the teams need defense next to the stars. Defenders that are not totally incapable of scoring.

Edit: I forgot Hield. Another volume shooter who is much deadlier from three than THJ
Edit2: Rozier is also available

It's really hard to know what a specific players' value is to any other team.  All it takes is one buyer.

Think of all the hype on this board about players that other teams have mostly given up on. Heck, even Christian Wood and Richaun Holmes had a bunch of people hopeful that they could resurrect careers.

It's like that good-looking girl with a rotten personality that a guy thinks "she's salvageable".

...but of course, occasionally, a player makes a comeback!

While I agree with you that I don't want to pay a first for a backup center, if I had a choice between Kuz and Gafford for the same price, I pick Gafford without question.

You forgot to add Kuz, who is in the same category as Clarkson and the Bogi's.

Agreed.  We need a backup big far more than a backup scorer.

We're 20-10 when Dereck Lively plays and 4-7 when he doesn't.  By my interpretation, Lively's on/off this season is + 8.6 this season.  That's higher than even Luka.

Having another Dereck Lively-type center on our roster would improve our competitiveness significantly.

I do agree with this, but I am curious what Powell's on/off is?  He actually has a higher net rating that Lively right now.

Is this too unrealistic?

THJ goes back home to Miami which I know he'd love and the Heat have had interest in the past. They use Lowry's contract to get a good role player and a reclamation project on the cheap.

Mavs come in and provide a place for Capela to be absorbed as the Heat have no use for him. They also can take Deandre Hunter and basically reset ATL's capsheet.

ATL then has Maxi as a defensive stretch 4 they've been looking for since trading Collins away at a cost controlled contract, and plenty of cap room.

Mavs are eating the most amount of salary here hence why no 1sts are included.

Another more splashy version would be:

MIA: Dejounte Murray+THJ

ATL: Maxi+Lowry+Jovic+Holmes+Highsmith+ Heat 2026 FRP+ Heat 2028 FRP+ Lakers 2025 2nd, Mavs 2 2nds.

Mavs: Capela+Hunter

Net trade remains basically the same, but the Heat get Murray. ATL gets the 2 firsts (which is the reported minimum they wanted for Murray), 3 2nds,  plus some pieces to help them finish out this year and build around Trae next year. On top of resetting their cap sheet.

Mavs new rotation either way:

Luka/Curry
Kyrie/Green/Hardy
Exum/DJJ
Hunter/GW
Lively/Capela/Powell

I would love this trade as it keeps our first available in the summer and now we have Hunter+Green as a starting point to package with those 3 firsts for a star.

RE: Trade & FA 2023-24: Mavs interested in Miles Bridges? Herb Jones? - Chicagojk - 01-22-2024

multiple picks for Kuzma doesn't feel like the final piece. I don't think there is a move at this time though. I need to learn more about Kuzma. Hate saying yeah or no without knowing the player really well.

It was interesting to see what expiring's and Multiple picks brought Indy. I am also interested what it brings Philly. It is being reported/guessed that the time is now for PHilly and they are better served trying to win now than holding all that cap room for this summer. It will be a good idea of the type of player we may be able to target this summer.

I am sort of wondering if rather than looking for a high priced #3 best player on the team that we try to break that up. For instance, 1 or 2 picks for an overpriced good player and 1 or 2 picks for a young, value player. Is that enough to put this team in contention?

BASKETBALL ON ? (@BasketballOnX)
Philadelphia K.J. Martin has been made available in advance of the trade deadline ; per @TheSteinLine

“Word is that the 76ers are looking for a quality second-round pick in a potential deal.”

From Stein:

It is believed that the Los Angeles Lakers, to date, have engaged in the most substantive trade discussions with Atlanta on Murray.

The Lakers, to be clear, have made Austin Reaves off-limits in those talks, but league sources say they are willing to package their lone available future first-round pick in 2029 with D'Angelo Russell’s trade-friendly contract to get a deal done.

Brad Rowland (@BTRowland)
Touched on this on the @LockedOnHawks podcast over the weekend as well.

Have heard multiple times this is the rough structure and a hold-up is the Hawks not wanting Russell and needing somewhere else to send him.
