If only we had an 18/10/2 stretch center on the roster last year whom we could have signed dirt cheap...

I see that comp in a different way that's revelatory (and relevant) ...

The Mavs have ascertained that, when there's an 18/10/2 center with a sucky self-focused attitude, it's preferable to just keep him off their roster, because he won't really be usable, and even at minimum salary they'd have no desire to go down that road.

I don't agree with it, but you're spot on with the Mavs' opinion.  It's the only thing that explains Wood.  It's the only thing that explains Ayton.

We then would have had the exception to do something else (and not have Holmes on the roster). Other way to look at it is who was at 12-20 that we might have picked up instead? I know a lot on discord were upset we didn’t get Cam Whitmore. I didn’t like Dick much, but he seems to have interest around the league. I remember kinda liking Bufkin, Hood-Schifino and the 2 guys the Nets picked up.

Celtics get Jrue for brogdan, Williams and picks. For Portland keep Williams? What is his value via trade?

Gotta think the blazers are going to see if they can squeeze another pick out of Williams. Holmes/first should get it done and Williams would make a ton of sense here but I would have a lot of trouble pulling the trigger on that one.

That seems like such an overpay to me at his age. Amateur hour at the Celtics this summer
Williams is worth at least a first rounder right?

edit. Actually just looked at the Celtics realgm board and maybe Williams is more done than I was thinking. A couple people mentioned how he was no longer the same guy physically after some injuries.

BTW, this is 1000x better than Herro and picks. Scoot/Ayton/Sharpe/Simons and a treasure trove of picks is a really good foundation to build on for a roster that’s been treading water for years.

I have trouble believing this.

Unfortunately I think Williams fits the new Blazer timeline so they are probably keeping him unless blown away by an offer

I agree on the timeline but I feel he doesn’t fit with the roster since you can’t play him with Ayton. He’s a good young player on a long, fair contract and the blazers won’t be relevant until after it expires. Personally, I would flip that asset for more draft capital but looks like the blazers feel otherwise.

They'll keep Williams to backup Ayton. Brogdon is the man on the move again I believe. Clippers tried to get him earlier, but it fell through. I told anyone that would listen, Jrue was going to Boston. It just made sense. But they gave up a lot to get him.

IMO, RW3 is THE ideal defending big in today's NBA.  Given they have Ayton and RW3's injury history, think Holmes/27FRP would do it?

You actually think that trade would happen?  I don't.  Even with his injury history, RW3 is better than Holmes, especially as a roller, lob threat and rim protector. I don't see why Boston gave him up truthfully.

I just can't believe a $12m/yr backup works for that franchise right now.

Holmes is only to make the salary work.  It's the 27FRP.

Yep. Those stats should easily have given him at least a $15 mill min contract with a lot of suitors. Yet no one wanted to take a flyer on him.  He might be good in LA just because he might want to not tick off Bron, but as I said last year, this is a guy who has talent and a lot of teams have given him a chance and yet none ever wanted to commit long term with him. The only regret is losing a FRP for him but that’s a gamble I would have taken anyday.

That would be a steal if Portland would take Holmes and our 2027 1st for Williams.  He's hurt a lot but when he plays, he's one of the best defensive players in the world.  His contract is amazing.  He's certainly worth the risk of the 2027 1st.  Portland says they plan to keep him but I don't believe that.  He's a winning player and that team will be tanking for a couple of seasons.

I think they'll trade him but I think he's worth more than our 2027 1st.

RE: Trade & FA 2023-24: Holiday traded to BOS| Dame to MIL - MarkAguirreWrathofGod - 10-02-2023

Would rather save our assets for a two way starter. Robert Williams is a good defensive player when healthy and in the right scheme but he’s always hurt. And Miami hunted him mercilessly in the playoffs last year. Doesn’t add much offensively. We already have the super charged version of him here in Lively. Two years from now Williams will be limping out of the league and Lively will be starting for us on a rookie deal.

That's completely not true.  He wasn't an NBA starter-level player until his full year in DET.  They signed Grant.  HOU signed him for 3 years.  HOU traded him for a FRP.

This was the only failed stop for Wood (as an NBA starter-level player).  He's going to ball out in LAL.  Wood/AD is an amazing combo.

Had they not matched Thybulle, J.Green would be appealing to them.  I just don't know what we have that they'd want, other than the 27FRP.

RW3 is the best switching big in the league.  Of course he's often hurt, but he wouldn't be available otherwise.  You're creating a false dilemma: no one is saying get RW3 and get rid of Lively; someone needs to start while/if Lively develops.

There is only one 2-way version of Robert Williams in the NBA-  Jaren Jackson Jr.  He is not available and if he were, we couldn't afford him.

I'm perfectly content to wait it out and see what we have with Derrick Lively.  I'm also curious if Richaun Holmes can bounce back somewhat.  Everything in the NBA is a gamble though and I'd be willing to gamble our 2027 1st to see if Robert Williams can stay healthier with us.  If he could, I think he'd make us a top-8 team in the NBA.
