RE: Trade & FA 2023-24: Harden: Time to get uncomfortable. Draymond+Kuminga beef? - Mavs2021 - 07-22-2023

1 enter FA and
2 potentially go to a better team

Those 2 points tend to be mutually exclusive.

If Siakam gets traded to ATL (or anywhere else), he'd better learn to love them, because that's where his best payday is almost certainly coming from. And top free agents work hard because they want top money.

The team that has Siakam when his contract expires can go over the cap to pay him what it takes. Any other team cannot. In fact, top teams with top talent tend to be dancing with the tax line and the apron, and don't have any cap room at all, when they would need to be 45-50M or so under the cap (not under tax or apron, but under the cap) to be able to offer him the contract he wants.

Harden seemed to have that same conundrum this summer. He wanted to be elsewhere, but the only team possible was a sucky one. So he decided not to be a FA after all, and instead signed his option to play for Philly and then started whining on how he hates it there. FA was not the avenue for him to get the money he wants and also get to the team he wants. If Morey sticks to his guns, Harden will again have the very same choices next summer, the ones he hates now, because good teams aren't likely to have big cap room to sign a top FA. IMO

Now that makes a lot more sense (and completely contradicts your whole point about Porzingis/Kyrie trades earlier).

That being said trading for Siakam is still a  LOT riskier, cause he has neither the injury history of Porzingis nor the mental and injury history of Kyrie.

He´ll basically be the #1 free agent next season and a lot more teams have capspace.

Teams that could be better than Atlanta with Siakam: Philly, OKC, Indiana, Orlando and Utah (just for the shits and giggles of Ainge offering Collins in a S&T). Then you have some losing wildcards like San Antonio, Washington, Portland and Detroit.

When you are the #1 player in free agency that is a lot of options. This year it was basically Houston or San Antonio.

What if he simply hates playing in Atlanta? In the end it comes down to what they have to give up for the additional legit risk.

I'm glad the Siakam to Atlanta talks have stalled. I'd rather the Mavs see what they have in Holmes and Lively before committing to giving up any assets for Capela. Plus I think if Toronto is forced to extend Siakam it increases the likelihood that OG walks in the summer. Maybe the Mavs can get involved in some type of sign and trade around THJ and picks.

That tweets says the opposite of what you're saying. After getting Ayo back, CHI is 1.8 mil under the tax line. And since CHI basically has never paid the tax, Keith Smith is saying don't expect CHI to bring in anyone else and they are largely done.

Probably a long shot given he left the NBA on his own terms because he wanted his family to grow up in Europe, but in the case he does want to come back to the NBA, does anyone have interest in Nikola Mirotic?

Barca just terminated his contract and they said they have no interest in bringing him back. 99 out of 100 times he's going to stay in the Euroleague but who knows?

Was already briefly mentioned 2-3 days ago. Honestly think he is better than all remaining NBA free agents but I have seen rumors that linked him to Milan and Belgrad. Don´t think he wants to return to the US.

He clearly watched a lot of Dirk.  Same release point on his jumper.

I don’t buy this at all but it just Shows you that you can never get complacent as a gm. The ground is always shifting.

Can't imagine him turning down 20 mil just because he loves Minny. Perhaps he was promised a role increase as well...

On his pod when having a discussion on the Cavs two big lineup and the value of centers on the market, Windy and MacMahon both mention that “Capela is on the (trade) block”

MacMahon also reiterates something we’ve heard multiple times that Dallas would love to have that kind of a starting center.

The Timberwolves are expected to move on from Jaylen Nowell, and the Mavericks are the team most closely linked to him, per @DWolfsonKSTP.

Nowell, a 24-year-old wing, averaged 10.8 PPG, 2.6 REB & 2 AST last season for the Wolves in 19.3 minutes per game.

He wasn’t good in the G league or this years summer league, but he was tied to the Mavs last year (but it ended everything the mavs did last offseason was wrong). Still 19 years old.

They had to do it. I would've done it.

Not entirely sure that's going to work out for them, however.

Yup.  In this new CBA you can't pay that type of money for a Robin who is known to disappear once in a while.  Is Brown even a top-10 player?  I have him somewhere between 15-20.
