Also, I was advocating for a $14M contract for GWill before we knew what he was getting.

I could apply the same logic to Williams being good on defense and Washington being bad. Maybe Williams is also too out of shape for more than 20 effective MPG. Maybe his good defensive numbers are a result of playing with four of the very best defensive wings/guards in the league. There are as many question marks about Williams as there are about Washington.

All reasonable, and part of the risk factor involved in where I think the contract should be. Seems you think he should get more, are you saying you would pay him $20M? That’s significantly more than Lauri.

Either way. Whichever year you swap, you don’t lose the ability to move it. ‘27,’28. Doesn’t make a difference to me. Whatever team you’re swapping with just has to have a pick that year also, so…

One thing that seems to missing in this discussion about PJ vs. a big - did you all see OMax boxing out in the SL games? (Sheds a tear) I never thought I would see that in a Mavericks uniform again. Thing of beauty. Can GW do that? PJ?

I would agree with this, but the talk is about giving PJ a much bigger contract and sending a bigger asset (first round pick vs pick swap).  Given that I think we went the right direction.  I feel the same way about PJ as I do about Capela.  I'm good with sending Timmy and a couple of seconds and paying 18-20 mil a year, but that is the line.

Agree on both, with the caveat that I like the idea of a '26 or '28 swap for PJ if needed.

So we pretty much agree. Although I might believe more in Washington than others, and under the right circumstances might be willing to trade a 1st. Dumping McGee will likely cost two 2nd round picks anyway, so maybe you can expand the trade. Another argument could be to tell Washington that Charlotte won´t budge on the 1st, so are you willing to sign a slightly smaller deal like 64/4 and we give you a player option for the final season.

Now it becomes much easier for him to outplay his contract and have very good re-trade value. I know for Mavs fans this is a virtually unknown concept, cause usually the contracts players sign with the Mavs are the last before their retirement from professional basketball.

In two years Washington is 26 years old. If he´s on a 16-18M contract that will be between 10-15% of the overall cap. He´ll have huge re-trade value, even at 18/7/3/1/1, which I think is his floor in two years.

Upgrading at the forward position(PJ Washington) while going to war with a "serviceable" center (Mr. Holmes) makes sense to me.  That relegates PnR GOAT "Diamond" Powell to "first center off the bench"

We can afford to be patient. This next move should be best player available. So many players could fit with this current roster. It’s refreshing

RE: Trade & FA 2023-24:CHA prefers to SnT Washington| 3-teamer for Siakam? - SkenfromLMF - 07-14-2023

I hope the Mavs are working on their involvement in the Capela deal to get one of the younger wings that Atlanta will need to move - from that perspective the hope has to be that the Hawks get Siakim and not KAT.
PJ Washington WOULD be a great get at around 16-18 million, but there is little to no way to make that deal work even if Charlotte agreed to a S&T.

McGee is a log that jams a lot these processes. His salary is not even ballast at this point. So the hope is to sneak him into one of these deals (Siakim) that moves a LOT of salary. Otherwise this is a dead-weight commitment, that REALLY makes last summer look worse.

Pick swaps with Charlotte? No problem. It’s swaps with San Antonio and Boston that will kill you. When does Charlotte ever miss the lotto?

They have a new owner, at least on paper I think. The whole Charlotte thing is very confusing. Big Grin Maybe there is an evil genius lurking. Then any reasonable new owner doesn´t allow MJ to still make draft and FA decisions after selling the team.

Giving him a deal around 4/$80 million would be really bad but giving up the 27 1st for the privilege to give him that contract would make my head explode.

The thing about that ‘27 pick, or any other pick, if the Mavs are bad then because they couldn’t make it work with Luka, they’re completely dead to me and should be for any other fan. They would deserve none. Hell, in that case, they should be dead to Cuban and he either sells the team or they move out of town. I don’t give a rat’s ass about any future picks except what they can bring back for Luka now. There is no tomorrow. We are truly all in. Failure in this case is existential.

I guess I'm just not seeing it in PJ Washington.  He's like John Collins.  Or a slightly better Christian Wood.  The idea of him is much better than what he is.  Tweener between C/PF.  Skilled.  Athletic.  Wants to get buckets and not really focused on being a role player. (especially troublesome on a team with Luka and Kyrie and coached by JKidd)

The 27 pick is our last decent asset.

I just don’t see this as an argument to trade it as soon as possible. I’d much rather wait until I find a deal that’s worth pulling the trigger.

This.

And, it’s better than decent. Basically has to be unprotected. It’s a BAD ASS asset. Mismanagement has led to a place where it’s their last, but it’s never too late to start making smart choices.

The Mavericks have signed Seth Curry.

The nine-year vet has shot at least 40.0% from deep in each of the last seven seasons, the longest active streak in the @NBA.

Curry will wear #30 for Dallas.

Fair enough.  I don’t want to waste the asset. PJ is a little bit of a projection, though I like him. But the Mavs have no reason to hold on to that asset as some kind of hedge for the future.  They don’t have one except for Luka.  When the time is right at some point over the next 12 months, they need to go all in.

Is it too much to ask for Luka's agent to start dropping little hints around the league that he intends to request a trade next offseason? Would do wonders for the value of the 27 pick.
