I know, we’re im full hype-mode around here right now, Nico is already GM of the year for the majority of the board, Lively will be the next Tyson, yada yada yada but we certainly did not „steal“ Grant Williams. That picks swap has very high upside get for the Spurs.

Also: big no on dumping McGee for the 2nd round picks we just acquired. That‘d be the same type of shortsighted move we did when we dumped Delon for 2nds a few years ago. Just keep him around for a little longer to make it work or buy him out of his contract. Cuban has saved plenty enough money over the last decade.

I think if McGee could be dumped for less than 2 SRP’s he’d be a Spur. Instead the Mavs have 5 centers and and extra 2nd round pick out of the deal. His money doesn’t prevent any major move so you just hold him and use his money for salary matching at this TDL or next. If he’s a cancer to the team you just waive him.

If Luka bails and we are so bad in a year that we can't tank that we get the first pick, there will be no point in being a Mavs fan anyways.

Co-signed.  I moved from Dallas to NOLA 5 years ago.  If Luka bails, I'm a Pels fan.

I think it was Tim Mac that said we would have started Thybulle at the 3 if we got him. Bruce Brown was the top target. I still think we’re active looking for another point of attack perimeter defender at the 3

3. X / Green
4. Williams / Prosper
5. X / Maxi / Lively

We have the bones for a top 10 defense going forward

1. Luka / X
2. Kyrie / Hardy / Curry

The missing guy offensively is a guy like Bojan

That’s why if Luka decides he wants out the first place they’ll send him is San Antonio to play with Wemby.  We’ll get our pick back and every other pick SAS has access to along with whatever helium youngster(s) they have.

And that Pop extension will take him right up to the season they win it all behind Luka and Wemby.

The league, for one. Can't aggregate Holmes for a few months.

Sadly, I think the Turner dream is dead. It seems clear that Carlisle is trying to reproduce his Luka/Powell/Porzingis system from the bubble year with Halliburton/Topin/Turner. I think Turner is uniquely qualified to make playing Topin at the 4 workable.

The Pacers are about to be a league pass favorite.

Not sure how legit this is, but just so there’s something to discuss, do we feel like Caleb Martin is worth that last 1st?

Yeah, I agree. They've really improved their team. They even signed college player of the year, undrafted Kentucky center Oscar Tshiebwe who's a rebounding monster. I expect them and Orlando to make some noise in the East.

Personally, I am far less convinced about Martin than Capela. Certainly not worth the full pick, so it depends what we get additionally in return.

Giving up a first for Capela scares me since I think there's a decent chance he'll be on the bench in crucial playoff minutes. Maxi or maybe even Williams would probably be the closing 5 unless Lively makes a major jump (fingers crossed)

Good news - The obvious salary match has to be JMc.
Bad news - He can only be a rental -- he becomes UFA  next summer, and he can't be extended before then. No telling what type of offers he might get. No RFA control.
Good news - But that reality might suppress the trade offers to beat.
Bad news - He's already about to turn 28, with only 4 years of NBA experience, and only 65 starts in 4 years.
Good news - But he does seem to still be getting better each year, with 49 starts and over 2000 minutes this last season.

Taking all that into consideration, I'm not offering a 1st, or even part of one. But I'm willing to talk about 2nd round picks (including swaps, and protections) and see where that takes things.

If there was some angle to being able to get a commitment for longer than a year, then a 1st (or part of one) begins to offer a way to make him more desirable. But that can't be done.

Thoughts on Filip Petrusev?

Is he someone that the Mavericks can use, does he fit with the rest of the roster, and what would it take to make a trade for him?

The initial news said Miami is seeking a FRP to include in the Lillard deal. So I guess the discussion is shut down if you come back with a 2 SRP offer. I doubt 2 SRP makes any difference in Miami trade discussions with Portland.

He had awesome playoff run, which ended badly in the final series. A solid player of DFS mold. His market value is likely a bit over MLE (similar contract DFS got), but there is a risk someone offers him way more and it wouldn't make sense to match. So, from this perspective, he is more of a final piece for a contender, than a long term bet. I think his value is protected FRP, which Mavs don't have to offer.

In general, I am not so sure why people are so against splitting the 2027 pick - there was similar discussion both in Capela case as well as now with Martin. 2027 pick on your own doesn't bring a superstar. It is basically a payment for a solid starter level player or two. Basically guys like Capela, Martin and a bunch of others. None of these guys is perfect. They all have their pluses and minuses. If they wouldn't have them, they would be stars and one FRP wouldn't be enough to get them.

Mavs have the option to hold onto the pick and hope for a superstar offer next summer with 2025, 2027 and 2031 picks. But there are two problems with that:
1. There are only so many superstars and most often than not, Mavs were not able to get into play for one (not to mention there would still be plenty of teams able to offer better packages)
2. New CBA makes it difficult to construct a 3 max level players teams.

Some have arguments, that 2027 pick comes after Luka is gone. But, if Mavs won't build a contender, Luka will certainly be gone. All contenders need to cash in their draft capital to build as good a team as possible.

As it is, Mavs still lack at least a center and could use another defensive minded wing besides Green and GW. On center, they certainly have a problem as Holmes and McGee deals will be very difficult to move this summer, meaning that new center would probably require contracts from other positions (THJ). They can decide to go with this team and solve the issues next summer, when expiring THJ, Holmes and McGee will be much easier to move. But, the risk they face is, they can have another bad season like last one, as the roster has obvious holes.

That is why I am really intrigued by the alternative, which is using the 2027 and try to bring two better fitting guys, splitting the pick. For example as discussed (many other options like that could be possible to construct). THJ and 2027 FRP for Capela and protected FRP from either Toronto or Atlanta. Use that protected pick with either Holmes or McGee for a solid wing. Perhaps even Martin. I certainly wouldn't be opposed against getting Capela and Martin for 2027. Mavs would still have 2025 and 2031 for final touch next summer.

RE: Trade & FA 2023-24: Isaiah Stewart gets 4/64 from DET| ATL wants Siakam? - Jason Terry - 07-13-2023

Now would be the perfect time to extend Green for a full MLE amount. Something like 4/50-4/60. That way we lock him up and teams won’t ask for him. Also we can make moves knowing what next year’s books will look like

I think we’re going to surprise many with how well the team plays next year. I see Green, Williams and O max all playing heavy minutes. If we could have all of them locked up long term on team friendly deals it would go a long way toward building a championship squad. I’m confident in those 3 players

The bigger question is Hardy and Lively, not Green and Omax. Will Hardy take the next step? What is the Lively timeline? Important to remember both are Rich Paul guys
