RE: Trade & FA 2023-24: Isaiah Stewart gets 4/64 from DET| ATL wants Siakam? - Smitty - 07-11-2023 From a Hawks message board about their GM’s recent interview: Landry's interview today about our young guys was eye opening. He pretty much acknowledged moving them for more playing time on another team is better for them and for us. Translation: prepare for a trade RE: Trade & FA 2023-24: Isaiah Stewart gets 4/64 from DET| ATL wants Siakam? - Ghost of Podkolzin - 07-11-2023 (07-11-2023, 12:51 PM)HoosierDaddyKid Wrote: Eason isn't buried behind any of those guys. I can see a scenario of Eason playing next to Smith Jr. He's a swiss army knife on both ends of the floor. He's getting his minutes. They know what they have in Eason, they'll laugh you off the phone with that offer. The evaluation of Eason is all over the map. I remember debating with someone here if he was worth more than the #17 pick where he was picked. Gawd, he'd be perfect on our roster. As of now I don’t know that we can assume Dallas is actually getting 2nd round picks from the Spurs, so they may only have that pick and the ‘30 SRP at their disposal. Frankly, I don’t think that will be necessary. I think what we are dealing with here is a group of 3 to 6 teams, who all want to accomplish something, but who all want to avoid paying tax. I honestly believe Dallas is doing everyone a solid by parking Capela’ s contract here. I think the situation is that some team would rather have THJ than Capela, and that Dallas feels the opposite way. That simple. So you think Capela’s contract makes him ‘a negative value’ and Dallas would be doing the Hawks a favor by taking on that money? RE: Trade & FA 2023-24: Isaiah Stewart gets 4/64 from DET| ATL wants Siakam? - KillerLeft - 07-11-2023 Tbh, if this Capela thing doesn’t happen I believe it will be because Masai asks for too much for Siakim. You can tell he’s out there trying to run up the price. There’s even rumors of Orlando interest today. My hunch is that ATL is the only team with serious interest and he just doesn’t like the offer. (07-11-2023, 01:57 PM)Smitty Wrote: So you think Capela’s contract makes him ‘a negative value’ and Dallas would be doing the Hawks a favor by taking on that money? Not the negative value part, no. But, it’s a big contract to swallow for a team who doesn’t feel they want/need him. Toronto is a switching team. Dallas can’t be anymore, now that Kyrie is here. They’re looking for the best drop coverage guys, and Capela might be the tippy top of that list. All in the eye of the beholder, baby. RE: Trade & FA 2023-24: Isaiah Stewart gets 4/64 from DET| ATL wants Siakam? - KillerLeft - 07-11-2023 They also just backed the truck up for Poetl, I think, so yeah, to Toronto, Capela would be a negative. Better cash in him while they can. They're even worse than we are at letting valuable free agents walk RE: Trade & FA 2023-24: Isaiah Stewart gets 4/64 from DET| ATL wants Siakam? - KillerLeft - 07-11-2023 (07-11-2023, 02:03 PM)Jym Wrote: Better cash in him while they can. There are even whispers he is strongly considering a boomerang if he is traded this year... There are even whispers he is strongly considering a boomerang if he is traded this year... Yeah, but that’s transparently about holding onto his dream of a “super max” as long as possible. On a bigger scale, it’s the same as when Deaven George vetoed his part in the Kidd trade all those years ago. He didn’t want to stay in Dallas so much as he wanted a team to have his Bird Rights so he could get paid more. Since Siakim is being shopped, it seems Toronto does not WISH to offer him said super max, and in fact doesn’t want even to negotiate with him. The second he gets traded he’ll look at it all much differently. RE: Trade & FA 2023-24: Isaiah Stewart gets 4/64 from DET| ATL wants Siakam? - SkenfromLMF - 07-11-2023 I see that about the SuperMax, but the boomerang comment caught me off-guard. This is akin to trading for Shohei Ohtani. I think once the super max isn’t a possibility he’ll be amenable to whomever offers the most money, which will probably be the team who trades for him and has his bird rights. Maybe you worry about losing him to Philly, I suppose. RE: Trade & FA 2023-24: Isaiah Stewart gets 4/64 from DET| ATL wants Siakam? - F Gump - 07-11-2023 (07-11-2023, 01:52 PM)KillerLeft Wrote: Frankly, I don’t think that will be necessary. I think the situation is that some team would rather have THJ than Capela, and that Dallas feels the opposite way. That simple. I think this is incredibly insightful, and it should inform our trade conversations. We look at THJ as a negative and someone we have to bribe a team to take. Another team may actually be thinking the same way about their player, not ours. Trades are very much a perception game, and the smart FOs are looking for a partner who sees opportunity, not a bad experience, in taking your player and giving up theirs. That applies to McGee too, as KL has noted ("ATL actually has mild interest in McGee as a backup center") and also applies to their multiple project players (Bey, Griffin, Johnson) who frustrate them because they have been in a win-now mode (as their GM is saying in Smitty's note "Landry's interview today about our young guys was eye opening. He pretty much acknowledged moving them for more playing time on another team is better for them and for us). They see flaws and want someone who is already a pro (enter THJ). And overlaying all of that is ATL being on a major quest for Siakam. I think there's a deal there that the Mavs can benefit from as well -- and when I noted I want McGee and a youngster included as part of the price, I don't think it's any big deal to ATL, just so long as they get whatever their main objectives would be (imo, probably get rid of Capela, and add some sort of draft capital to toss into the pot for Siakam). If the Mavs are willing to meet those needs, I think there is a great opening, so I hope they extract FULL value as they do so, because I think it's there for the taking. RE: Trade & FA 2023-24: Isaiah Stewart gets 4/64 from DET| ATL wants Siakam? - SleepingHero - 07-11-2023 (07-11-2023, 01:03 PM)KillerLeft Wrote: My understanding is that ATL actually has mild interest in McGee as a backup center. I have trouble believing that, but it’s out there. From the Mavs’ perspective it’s easy to realize why’d they’d want him in the deal. I read the Hawkssquak forum with their supposed insider Supes saying the opposite. I agree that McGee heading to ATL makes sense for all parties. But ATL might not want a 36 year old backup due 12 mil over 2 years. (07-11-2023, 04:30 PM)F Gump Wrote: I think this is incredibly insightful, and it should inform our trade conversations. I think FULL value in this trade is the Mavs getting a starting center. Trying to angle to get another young guy while also dumping McGee is asking for the world and is unrealistic. THJ+McGee+2nds is already more than fair for a guy like Capela. Getting another guy like Griffin/Bey/Johnson on top of that screams way too much. RE: Trade & FA 2023-24: Isaiah Stewart gets 4/64 from DET| ATL wants Siakam? - The Jom - 07-11-2023 The Stein comments have sounded like the Mavs are confident about THJ moving. Makes me wonder if there’s a team out there that wants him for nothing. Just a dump. Could Detroit or Orlando swing that still? This would make loads of sense out of the weirdness of this trade discussion. RE: Trade & FA 2023-24: Isaiah Stewart gets 4/64 from DET| ATL wants Siakam? - Smitty - 07-11-2023 If the Mavs can turn THJ (whom they’ve said will not be here) and McGee (whom they said will not be here) into a legit starting Center in Capela for only the cost of 2 SRP’s (that they got in a separate trade) it would be incredible stuff. Anyone that’s a Mavs fan and wants them to be good this season has zero reason to complain. I’m skeptical that will be the cost, because anything that’s too good to be true…usually is. But getting Grant Williams and Capela for Reggie, THJ, McGee and a ‘30 FRP swap is GM of the year stuff! RE: Trade & FA 2023-24: Isaiah Stewart gets 4/64 from DET| ATL wants Siakam? - Jym - 07-11-2023 (07-11-2023, 06:20 PM)Smitty Wrote: If the Mavs can turn THJ (whom they’ve said will not be here) and McGee (whom they said will not be here) into a legit starting Center in Capela for only the cost of 2 SRP’s (that they got in a separate trade) it would be incredible stuff. They don't deserve to be associated with the previous nonsense RE: Trade & FA 2023-24: Isaiah Stewart gets 4/64 from DET| ATL wants Siakam? - F Gump - 07-11-2023 (07-11-2023, 05:07 PM)SleepingHero Wrote: THJ+McGee+2nds is already more than fair From the angle of a DAL fan who wants to get rid of those players, sure. I get what you're saying -- but I don't think it's the best way to play the game. From a diff angle, where a team wants to move off of what they have and get yours, and has extra projects laying around (clogging up salary and not having a good path for getting minutes), "fair" might look different, if you have the self-confidence to ask. I work in a business where the "price" can often be negotiable, and I am regularly reminded that asking for what you prefer to get is often all it takes. There is no "fair price scale" in a world where values and needs can change daily. Like the NBA. |
