I disagree. I think his best spot is at 3. And the rebounding edge of having him there alongside the bench guys Maxi-OMax / Maxi-Powell would help in that area. Ultimately it doesn’t matter what ‘position’ he plays because of all the switching but I’d like to have DFS who can switch and guard 2/3/4 over THJ.

He would give us a good back PF and hustle guy for 15-20 minutes per game.  I think it's confusing why we're not interested in this player.  It suggests to me that Cuban is prioritizing saving money as opposed to accumulating talent.

I'm in complete agreement.  Realizing the nba is more or less positionless, putting it more traditional terms, DFS is best suited at the 3 than the 4.  That said, THJ is more of a 2 than a 3.  Who would I rather at the 3?  DFS all day long.

RE: Trade & FA 2023-24: Reed signs 3/23 deal with UTA|Brooks deal w/HOU actually 4/86 - KillerLeft - 07-09-2023

Nah, DFS is a 4. It’s where he played for the past few years here, because he has an athletic edge at that position.

If you brought him in to play the 3, you’d think he looked slow, that he didn’t shoot well enough (fewer wide open shots) and would be annoyed that he can’t really handle the ball. Green and THJ are both better handlers and both have a faster release to get shots off quickly (though Green sometimes doesn’t pull the trigger, sadly). At this point, they’re probably both a little better suited to guard the ball, chase guards around screens, etc. Green is, for sure. Finally, in the event you do want to go bigger, which won’t be often the way the game is played today, you can throw Omax out there at the 3 for those stretches.

I would GLADLY take DFS back on this team, he’s one of my all-time favorite Mavs. But, his starting spot is gone. He’s not beating out Williams or Green, and THJ is more valuable off the bench than DFS, imo. If his head was right with the role, he could legitimately compete for 6MOY.

PJ Washington has to be revisited if he’s really about to accept the QO. CHA should majorly incentivized to cooperate on a s&t. The idea that he’s not a posistion of “need” after acquiring GW is ridiculous. If you could snag a player of his talent for THJ and 2 2nds you’ve got to try.

Let’s say I agree (I might, big fan of PJW).

What’s your plan to play everyone? You willing to start PJW at center and go small a lot (sign me up, for what it’s worth), or are you trying to talk one of them into coming off the bench? They’re not playing either of them at the 3, if that’s your move.

Remember the two Antwans back in the day? I guess it worked out in the end, asset wise, but it sure did get awkward and waste an entire season. This would be the sequel, I worry.

The 76ers are matching Paul Reed’s three-year, $23M offer sheet with the Jazz, sources tell ESPN. Per sheet’s terms, Sixers must guarantee last two years of Reed’s deal if they win the opening round of playoffs this season.

Man, they have a ton of centers. Bamba is in yet another dead end position.

Has he signed his contract yet?  Probably not a ton of teams beating down his door, but you would think there would be better options for him.

I’m not buying that PJ and GW can’t play together as forwards against a lot of matchups.. would love those small ball 5 lineups as well…. but regardless i’m betting on the talent. Go to training camp with best roster you can and figure it out. Everyone is always saying you cant have enough 6’6-6’9 guys who have versatility. Here’s your chance. We’re already assuming Maxi is closing at the 5. I think PJ can potentially play a similar role but with a lot more skill/ability offensively. Plus Maxi is older/injury risk…. I’m rambling thoughts but yea just go for it imo.

I'd say the difference in the 'Twans and today's roster is that neither of the teams best two players today would be ahead of GW/PJW like Dirk was with Jamison and Walker. It was awkward in that Dirk had to play out of position as well as one the 'Twans. That absolutely compromised an already weak defensive team with Nash at the point and then Dirk at C with Jamison/Walker trying to cover a PF. It didn't help that the lack of offensive opportunities could lead to even less interest in playing defense when Walker didn't get the ball. Sometimes Jamison could pout as well, but it did not seem to be as often.

That said I would be willing to see if OMax can cover 3's efficiently if we have PJ & GW working as 4's primarily.

Good point about Dirk.

If they could talk one of them into coming off of the bench (probably Williams, since PJW would be making like $20M in this scenario) I’m good with it. But, I think they’ll continue to look for 2/3 types who can defend and centers.

I'm going to cut thru..

The problem back then was--- the franchise player was a PF, and all 3 of ém PFs are known for their scoring.
And not one of ém is known for defense.
All 3 needs to score to be effective.
That's never going to work.

As for the PJ-GWill-Maxi trio:
Maxi is the first big off the bench, and you send him in to slide down PJ to PF, or push GWill up to PF and let PJ take his first rest at the 8th minute mark.
It's going to be a small frontline, but I'm already seeing the value of PJ at C in the playoffs. Mavs would no longer be at the mercy of Maxi bringing his A game every night in order to neutralize every opposing big. PJ and Maxi could drive off bigs as early as game 1 of a play off series.

PJ is a flex F-C.  He'd be fine at the 5 with GWill at the 4.

One potential issue with PJW would be the contract it would take. Or maybe not, depending on your view of his worth.

Let's work with the THJ + 2nd concept to see what it looks like.

If CHA intends to keep Oubre or his rights (and they seemed to like what he gave them last season), the snt match for PJW gets tricky because of Base Year issues. The smallest number you could pay him in that swap would be a starting salary of $20,795,456. If you're keeping score, that does land the Mavs under the tax line by almost $2M.

If you did max-declining salaries, the deal is either 3 yrs/$59,267,050 or 4 yrs/$76,943,187.

Is he worth that sort of number, in this NBA economy? With a hard cap world, that question really matters, if you don't want to kill your roster-building options ahead. And if you're keeping Green, he's going to have a sizable salary jump next season that has to be part of that equation.

The question to ask is how much of an improvement would he offer, at a position that seems to be fairly well stocked already for both now and the future (Maxi, GWill, Prosper). And he's neither the C nor the wing that the Mavs are looking for, so now how do you navigate those waters?

I really don't get why they resigned Trez Harrell. He was nailed to the bench last season, and lost his backup center minutes to the guy they just matched, Paul Reed. Then they sign Bamba? Somebody is gone I would think.

Hard pass on that. And I have to think, that if that's an accurate read on CHA's demands, it clearly explains why the Mavs are so dismissive of the idea of a pursuit of PJW.

This is part of my thinking as well.

I think he’s worth the $18-20M he’s seeking, but admit it’s matter of the beholder and far from a given. And, I would’ve been much more ready to bite before I got Williams locked in at MLE money, personally. Whether we want to admit it or not, their positional overlap saps SOME (not all) of the on court value PJW brings to the table.

Still, I get why people are reluctant to let it go and wouldn’t hate it.
