We do if we’re trying to flip holmes plus THJ for something else.

Are you saying Dallas has some control over whether SAC finalizes this? Do you know this for a fact? Just asking as I know nothing about this.

All in on the idea of starting Lively immediately as others have posted even if it’s just the fake McGee-starting spot. I don’t expect a ton of him early on & remain skeptical in general but a defined role with a clear path to minutes sure won’t hurt his development. 1500 minutes should be the goal imo, that’s roughly 18mpg over a 82 games season and twice the amount Hardy saw last year.

Irving
Green
Doncic
Williams
Lively

+ Hardy, Curry, Hardaway, OMax and Kleber/Powell

would be a fun rotation. Don’t care much for Holmes, I think he might just be done at this point.

You’d actually be on a good path to do both, compete and develop.

Also I REALLY hope some of the takes on OMax are correct and he can be a part of the rotation from day 1.

Having four rookie scale contract guys in our regular rotation would be HUGE going forward. If they manage to get that done while staying competitive that’s basically the holy grale of nba teambuilding when you already have two high salary guys like Luka and Kyrie around.

Trades are finalized with a formal call to the league office by both teams. The league is very busy documenting multiple deals, so it could be as simple as the Dallas/Sac trade being lower on the list. But it also could be in the interest of both teams to wait a little while to expand the deal. We'll see.

This is my guess.  Both teams are working in good faith to see if there are ways to improve the trade.

Thanks, I was wondering\hoping if it was a concerted effort to refrain by either or both teams.

If it is a conscious decision, I have some hope that a Holmes trade is still being chewed on by the Mavericks

Richaun Holmes now official

Hat tip to Tyler.

From this point forward - Holmes can only be aggregated with other players after 60 days. Before that, he can be traded alone (or with picks) at any time. In other words, a trade one-for-one or a trade that includes Holmes and picks. No multi-player trade that includes Holmes.

Hollinger

In a vacuum, the Pelicans had the right idea in declining the fourth-year option on Herb Jones to lock him into this next contract right now (a reported four years, $54 million). The problem is that entailed a $10 million raise for Jones this season, and the Pelicans … don’t really have the money for it.

Even after waiving Garrett Temple on Wednesday, New Orleans projects to be $5 million over the tax line if it fills the last two roster slots with veteran minimum contracts. This is a franchise that is, shall we say, averse to paying the luxury tax, which means the likelihood remains high that the Pels move either Kira Lewis Jr. or Jonas Valančiūnas just to shimmy under. How much that will cost them remains a question.

Hmm...

So the Pelicans need to shed money. And with no Thybulle, Dallas has $10.5mm-ish in space left under the apron. The cost difference between Valanciunas and McGee is just under $10mm. Would the Pelicans trade Val for McGee + 2 2nds?

Sign me up.  He's a great bridge to Lively being ready.

Heck if we made that trade I could live with THJ for another year. Dumping 3 bad contracts in one offseason and getting value for them would be amazing

You can do a trade match of McGee for someone up to $11.71mm, so Zubac works.  But, McGee doesn’t reach Val.  Holmes would reach Val, but not McGee.  This space “under the apron” vs. the MLE vs. trade matching thing is like 3 dimensional chess right now.

Still have the trade spread to deal with. Good news, THJ and McGee trade spread is close to $6M.

Ah -- good point. Thanks for the reminder.

I am sure they would move Holmes for a better fitting piece, but that is probably a long shot. So, lets see if we can rehab him and see if he can be a solid fitting piece.

Without knowing if he has anything left, in all honesty if he does it would probably be best as a backup big coming off the bench with Lively starting. Although, due to Lively's age that will probably need to be flipped.

I know it has been a great offseason, but I’m still sad about the Thybulle match…

Two words: Pow. Ell.

RE: Trade & FA 2023-24: Blazers match deal for Thybulle| Grant Williams is a Mav - Winter - 07-06-2023

It won't be Powell.

Summer League may tell us more about Lively, but I think Holmes starts over Powell for sure. That's a message you have to send Holmes if he's going to be reclaimed.

RE: Trade & FA 2023-24: Blazers match deal for Thybulle| Grant Williams is a Mav - BigDirk41 - 07-06-2023

I think Powell is the 3rd center and more of a mentor spot player going forward. He's a hell of a person, teammate, professional, etc. I see the appeal for keeping him and showing Lively and others the way. He's a hard worker for sure.

Also don't be surprised if Lively is the starter when the season opens assuming we don't trade for a center. I see Lively starting and getting 15-20 minutes a game until he shows he can handle more. They didn't draft this kid as a 3 year project as some have suggested.
