I didn’t get the Hardy comparison but then remembered he reclassified and was playing a year ahead so to speak. He was 18 as a freshman I think and was a top 1-3 recruit in his draft class before the reclass. I have seen him compared to Jaren Jackson Jr. I think in that he projects as a rim protector who can step out to shoot the 3 and has just enough off the bounce game to be a threat. He’s an interesting one.
Just serves to drive home to me the feeling that a really good player should be there for us at 10 if we keep the pick.
Yeah, it wasn’t that their games matched up. It was the reclassification and the similar high ranking in their respective classes.
I think both may have been a little over their heads in the G-League and at SC. There are certainly some holes in GG’s game just like there were concerns in Hardy’s efficiency numbers. A good bit of Jackson’s issue seems to be decision making (too many hard shots and not enough easy ones). Recall Hardy had a similar issue with his poor efficiency in the G-League. Just seems like it might be an mis-priced asset.

If Lively is available later in the first, I don't think the Mavs pass on a young C.
IF there is any good news it is that trading out of the first BEFORE the draft cannot happen. So we are protected from total abandonment of the draft. I do believe that the trade down theory has legs IF it can produce a legit rotation/starter in return OR can drastically reduce salary.

At least they are looking at late 2nd round/undrafted prospects. Teams will have an additonal two-way spot next season. Would be nice if the Mavs start to show some interest in the development of undrafted players.

Emoni Bates feels like this draft's Jaden Hardy. Plenty of hype for good reason followed by some poorly timed down seasons/off court issues (this one doesn't apply to Hardy).

He'll probably be a better prospect because of his length. He's just what teams are looking for.

It is interesting how he will be rated. He actually has a negative wingspan and his athleticism is pretty poor. Jaden actually has a longer wingspan.
He is still very young and he makes some incredibly difficult shots. But his role to at least get started in the NBA will not require this. He will need to defend, spread the floor and limit the mistakes. He has never been asked to do this.
His first year at Memphis can be explained away. He was out for a lot of the season and probably wasn't quite ready...especially with the lofty expectations. This year is a little more difficult to explain. He put up good #s but not good stats...if that makes sense. He went to a lower level and his team was bad. Was he part of the reason why they were bad? You would think a top recruit could have elevated a team at that level.
Spend 10 minutes watching his highlights and they are pretty eye opening. His lowlights must be awful though considering the shots he takes.

Just can't see the Mavs drafting a player who's not a great defender.

Certainly not with a top 10 pick but if he slides into the second round I wouldn't mind a move to get value out of him there ala Hardy.

If the Mavs lose Kyrie, I'm leaning on a PG for the pick.
Let's say the Mavs get pick 10..
If Black is still on the board by 10, I'd pick him outright, no questions asked (Hendricks is my guy but the Mavs would be without a second playmaker if they lose Kyrie).
If Black isn't available at 10, there's Cason Wallace (I'd pick Hendricks over this guy even if the Mavs lose Kyrie, he isn't the same quality as Black as far as playmaking goes).
The Mavs can still get a PG further down with the Nets picks.
Trading down from 10 to 21 and 22 (plus of course -- the option to get a rotation player and/or unloading McGee)
Ideally these two picks would be PG (Jalen Hood-Schifino) and a C (Dereck Lively)

Problem is the draft comes before the decision to stay or go happens. On draft night (unless we finally start tampering, yay) we’ll theoretically be in the dark.
Also, I’m not opposed to anything that gets us talent on the floor.

If Kyrie simply walks as a FA to another team, with Mavs getting nothing, the Mavs are so doomed. Figuring out what to do next is like deciding how to put a bandaid on a bullet wound.

I would humbly suggest that in the future we’ll look back at the Kyrie trade itself as the bandaiding of a bullet wound.

I get it.
And I agree with you with a resounding YES THE MAVS ARE DOOMED.
For the first time in so many years, I'm not feeling good about the Mavs.
Even in the waning Dirk years, I feel like okayish, but now... even with a Superstar, the feeling of hopelessness fills the air.
So.. please excuse me for making my little plans for a better Mav future.
(Although I must say the looming retention of Kidd has a bigger negative effect on me than Kyrie leaving. Kyrie was a gamble, but Kidd staying is just pure ineptness).

We simply can't let Kyrie and Wood walk without getting talent in return. Take this roster minus these two from a talent perspective and you're looking at a 30 win team with Luka walking as soon as he can.

Absolutely zero scenarios where I see Wood coming back

Agree. And Mavs also won't get anything back. No one wanted his bird rights at TDL (or at least didn't offer anything of value for that), so I see no way Mavs get anything in SnT.

Wouldn't say it's impossible. If Wood wants to go to a team that doesn't have cap space to sign him, he'll need to work with the Mavs to get a S&T completed. Was actually thinking this may have been something where they could have had some sort of handshake deal under the table/behind the scenes or w/e during the season. They have a deal ready to go in the offseason and Mavs aren't doing anything but tanking so they drop Wood's minutes and phase him out. As to why they wait until the offseason instead of TDL, maybe there's some reason to wait but not really gonna bother with that.
