The Cavanaugh tweet was encouraging, but not really worded like something we can trust. My initial high has subsided, and now I need another, more permanent fix.

Yeah, because undefined roles were not the problem

So Nico running things.  Robin does what Batman says every. single. time.

I would like to see definitive Bob is leaving info.

I hate Bob (for the Mavs), but we'd better be obtaining a qualified talent evaluator (hint: that ain't Nico, much as I love him as a choice).

Well, we don't know which position he was offered on other team.

I hope Kidd has some say in the decision making as well. Otherwise he might attempt another coup lol

Seriously tho after thinking on it, I think there's a decent chance Finley might have a good eye for talent and I think Kidd could as well. I completely respect Kidd's knowledge for the game and being able to say I want this guy over here because his skills would fit great with what I like. I'm sure Rick has suggested moves over the year to Donnie like that. And scouts have suggested guys to Donnie and Donnie has found his own guys. A team effort of sorts. I'm guessing that's the dynamic they want to duplicate for better or worse.

The weird thing about the Dame/Nico thing is I think Dame is signed to Adidas and not Nike.

Embarrassing, but I literally posted that gif thinking it read "tell me now!"

In general, my proof-reading has gone to hell since I started posting here. I used to never make errors, but these days I have to edit posts like 3 times after posting.

Seems like Cuban is not going to be happy with Cato after this.

Sad about Moseley.

Can someone summarize the important points of Cato's article, as was done last week? I'm behind a paywall that isn't going away, here.

Thanks, KL, for the part you posted in your edit.

To me, the most important part is whoever they get as a talent consultant. Cuban doesn't know basketball talent from his ass or a hole in the ground.

I don't have time to summarize right now (hopefully I didn't include too much and cross a line) but the tone is very anti-Cuban. The gist is that nothing has been solved.

Not sure I fully agree, but then again, he makes some valid points.

One thing I noticed earlier today but forgot to mention is that Harrison's twitter account reads "GM and President of Basketball Operations for the Dallas Mavericks." I don't think any notable, experienced personnel help is coming.

Cato Addresses New Mavs Structure

Highlights

There are some new faces at the Mavericks, but the “new” organizational structure is very much unchanged. New roles will be filled by old friends — Dirk, Kidd, Barea, maybe Jet. Even Harrison, who was largely unknown to the public, has iong been a familiar face at the AAC.

Cuban is still the man in charge. The search firm was more of a PR ploy than a decision-making resource. A search was not conducted for either Harrison or Kidd.

Harrison fits easily into the power structure as the POBO-GM, where an established league or agency executive might have chafed. He has certain skills that transfer well, and has relationships with players around the league. With the team evidently continuing to prize free agency as their primary path to team-building, despite their lack of success with it, Harrison may be able to be helpful.

To the extent Harrison's job really requires running the organization, or being responsible for on-court results, he will have a steeper learning curve than an experienced guy would, and he himself downplays his skills as a talent evaluator. However, it is not clear that his role will require exercise of those responsibilities, which may continue to be performed by Finley, who is expected to have a greater role in player transactions and interaction with other front offices. What each person does will depend on Cuban. Both men are respected around the league.

Kidd is a bigger question mark. He has recently gone through being the lead assistant coach for the Lakers, a phase he himself thinks he “skipped” when he went straight from player to head coach. He was a stellar point guard, and has worked with superstars Giannis and LeBron in a coaching capacity. Still, his head coaching resume is not strong, and his personal/professional history raises serious questions. Players seem to like him, but that was also true of Mosley, who is expected to leave after not receiving the serious head coaching consideration that he thought he would.

More peripheral shakeups are expected, particularly in the coaching staff, but the main pieces are in place, for now, and the overall structure continues to be business as usual.

When I read Cato's framing of the same facts that we've known for a day or so I think, "maybe so, we'll see." But I don't get too discouraged. I've already had some similar thoughts and moved on a bit. I've already been a little disappointed about Moslèy, but then remembered that originally I thought a rookie coach was a bad idea. So Cato doesn't move the needle for me too much this time around.

But there is something that bugs and discourages me, and it's that interview transcript of Cuban that someone posted. He's so reactionary. And I'm realizing that many of the Mavs moves over that last few years have been reactionary, with each offseason attempting to address the sudden realization brought on by the season that just ended. That interview screams that they have no plan except to try to fix whatever they happened to notice the previous year. It strikes me as amateurish. So that discourages me more than Cato.

I don't really get people being upset over Mosley.  So he gets along with Luka?  Um, I'm pretty sure a lot of people could achieve that.  But if we're quantifying coaching, then he shouldn't get a very good grade a defensive coordinator.  Even if Rick was "jealous" of his relationship with Luka, there is little reason why he wouldn't endorse him other than lack of skill.

And really, if Mosley was such a players coach, then I'd hope he could have figured out or helped KP be better.

My take on Cato is he is trying to find that truth to power narrative that made him important for a week.

His big point is Cuban is still the "ultimate authority" after all these moves and moves to be made.  I think everyone understood that would be the case.

Kidd was whisked past Mosely in "questions of meritocracy" per Cato.  Kidd has a lot more resume/Mavs lore than in house Mosely imo.  You may not like the move but that statement is a bit much.

Yeah, that's good Hypermav. I thought the bit about Mosley and Kidd was silly as well. There wasn't much content in his take so he had to make it with tricked up phrasing.
