But the kid is ready to win so if you upgrade the roster, which seems like a really low bar to clear, he'll have no ill will toward the franchise and can still be friends with Donnie. I just don't know how people can think that: 1) Marc Spears is out of the blue somehow super connected with Luka knowing how he personally feels about this move, even though Luka's in Slovenia 2) Donnie and Luka is apparently super close out of nowhere despite there being no mention of it the last 3 years (besides Donnie scouting him but thats not a personal relationship to be upset over) 3) That Cuban would make this choice without discussing it with Luka and his feelings. 4) Not remembering that Spears has historically downplayed Luka as seen here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tB5rrrW3zxU Just does not make sense to me. As always E!SPN is trying to make the most drama as possible.

Missed the entire drama. Cannot say that I am unhappy with the results. Much needed divorce that could have been handled a lot better. Donnie is still part of the ownership group of the Legends. Can only hope that Cuban did not burn all the bridges.

Thank you Donnie.

And judging by the reputation of the scouting firm for taking a deep dive into the organization, it can also be part of a larger effort to fix the internal team. Heaven knows they could use a good housecleaning. No matter what, I'm guessing there's already a short list of candidates who are all busting their asses gaming out roster building ideas. That's probably the biggest interview conversation anyway. It's not like an experienced GM candidate is going to make it through the interview process, roll into the team on day one, and say "ok -- who plays here again?".

What has he done that is good is also a valid question though. Every move made since Luka, Brunson and Seth Curry signing has been a different shades of bad. It's easy to hindsight the KP trade, but when you look at how patient Utah and Phoenix were, it shows you how bad we are at most facets of roster construction. Was Delon a Donnie thing, Bob thing, neither, both? I was really excited for Bob to come aboard the Mavs and for whatever reason, I don't think its' yielded the results I had hoped for in terms of roster building.

I wish DFWSportsguy would just tell us who the next GM is so we can go back to the trade machine already...

RE: This Situation
I think there is no chance that Sunday was the moment Cuban knew he would be needing a new GM. None. I wouldn't be shocked if Cuban has known for months he would be getting a new GM. I wouldn't be shocked if Forde has been looking for a new GM for Cuban behind the scenes for months. Like one poster rightly observed: Remember the trade fiasco with MIA? Cuban HAS to have known there were issues for months and months. If Ujiri is the guy, then it is possible he AND Cuban have known that for months. Ujiri might have been biding his time waiting for the Mavs season to be over. Ujiri back in May: Quote:"Everybody says, 'Blank check, blank check,' but I'm not as much focused on a blank check," Ujiri said during a news conference when asked what he will think about in making his decision. "A lot of the things that we've done here, we have to move forward as a franchise to compete with the best in the NBA. This is all about winning a championship again.

Two things:
1) I don't think Ujiri, nor any GM worth having, is coming here without complete autonomy. As in, Cuban butts out on *all* basketball matters. A lack of hand-wringing about this situation is imprudent given that's why Cuban wants to be the owner at all. It's his toy, not an investment. Who's to say that a GM as willing as Donnie to bend over for Cuban is going to make any difference whatsoever, or is going to be one iota better than Donnie? 2) I think that Occam's Razor says that Bob has been the guy for months. If Cuban doesn't reconsider that, we Mavs fans are completely screwed.

I haven't read through all of the comments to see the general mood of the board, but I, for one, think this is a move that's way past due. Yes, he hit on Doncic and Dirk 20 years or so apart, but since 2011 the team has struggled with finding talent in the draft and roster management. It may well be mostly Cuban's fault, but Donnie has been the GM, and he has to bear a lot of the responsibility.
My guess is this is Cuban's decision.
I'm sure Cuban doesn't think like I do, but if I were in charge, I'd also fire The Bob over the Head Collector thing. That's classless.

So, first thing is first:
My mainest man, @"JamesConway", has been calling for Donnie to get fired for a month, and I've been sort of low-key making fun of him about it because I didn't think it was even the remotest of possibilities. Please accept my apology for that, my guy. You were right! ...I see a lot of assuming that this is part of a plan, and that it has been done for a while. Idk...I think it's just as likely that this article prompted Cuban to try to "get to the bottom" of who is unhappy and talking, and then once everyone's cards were on the table and he STILL wanted to keep this haralabob guy around Donnie decided to take his toys and go home. I can easily imagine that it worked out that way, actually, but we of course don't know. Carlisle was brought here by Donnie - they've been friends for like 40 years or something crazy like that. He might not even WANT to stay here without Donnie, and at the very least I'd say he's feeling less secure than he was before this happened. Random thought: has anyone considered that Carlisle might be a candidate for GM? I don't know that I think that's likely, but it's also not impossible. He could slide Terry Stotts in as coach and keep on running the same system. Donnie liked Porzingis. Just like he liked Shawn Bradley and Pavel Podkolzin. I wonder whether any disagreement about how to navigate the crossroads the team is at with KP factored into all of this. |
