I understand why it would upset the people who own the TV rights but come on, who watches sports on TV these days. It's meaningless to compare without adding streaming numbers(both official and of the high seas variety).

A fair point, but I don't think even with the addition of streams (both legal and illegal) would make up for the 5-10 million views per game difference these last 2 finals have averaged compared to even just 4 years ago.
Its impossible to know though. And frankly the money starts and ends with TV contracts, so as far as the NBA is concerned they should be worried.

It's not the NBA, it's the nature of basketball and the changing times.. It's too long, too many games, and it's going the way of baseball. Younger viewers don't watch games - they watch highlights. Even the people here approach everyone not Mavs-related that way.

Even in football/soccer which the most popular sport worldwide they are discussing making it shorter because of that. Sports are no more competing with each others, they are competing with Netflix, youtube, online gaming etc and then other sports.
A.Silver is a progressive commissioner but he has yet to show he can understand that.

2019 playoff had a drop in all means of broadcasting including illegal streaming. Wasn't able to see stats for next years but there is no reason to think that trend didn't continue

So according to O'Connor GSW, Sacramento, NO and Indy are looking hard to trade their pick for a player that can contribute immediately.

Was coming to post this.
Do they rate KP? If they do we might have a good trade partner here

And if I'm ring hunting, Suns are as good as anyone in the West. I guess he could go East and join the Nets or Bucks. And at that point, that ring doesn't mean a whole lot from a legacy standpoint.
If Kawhi doesn't get hurt, we'll never know how the series would have turned out.

It was the 4th lowest watched NBA finals ever. Losing only to:
3rd. Spurs v Nets (2003).
2nd. Spurs vs. Cavs (2007).
1st. Lakers vs. Heat (2020).
Viewership for the NBA is at an all time low. Laughably low in fact. I enjoyed watching the finals but Adam Silver has to be shitting his pants at how viewership has cratered since the bubble.
It's not just the NBA, it's all sports. I can't wait for the NFL (which is the king of the ratings) but I think they'll lose viewership as well. People have more options on what to do with their free time.

What are sports going to do when all of us over 40 or so die off?

Not sure if that is still true. The NBA is doing better than ever on most platforms. A succesful transition to the modern era. Something other sports leagues like the NHL failed to do.

Let´s call Rick first and see how much he really loves those Mavs veterans. Burke + Powell for Lamb + #13.

The social media views is actually a prove that people actually loves highlights. The thing is NBA won't generate that much revenue through those highlights in comparison to real games.
What is the number of league pass subscriber? does it it really cover for the loss in TV ratings? I would be skeptical but I think this is the key to the discussion

Direct income from those platforms (youtube) isn´t important but it doesn´t hurt to get some extra money through advertisments. Important part is that it makes the product more attractive for sponsors. Also helps with the merchandise.

If ifs and buts were candy and nuts. Suns are a contender, they proved it this season. They were also wrecking shop in the bubble. Hard to call them a fluke.

If CP3 leaves (which you don't think is going to happen), the Suns will still be a problem for the (hopefully) new-and-improved Mavs. If he stays, they'll be an outright roadblock - likely more than any other team in the West, tbh.

I just think if CP3's motivation are his money and having a chance a title, the Suns make the most sense.

I mean, TV viewership is just going down in general tbh. And will likely to trend downwards as more people begin adapting newer habits (and older people … get older …).
Even the big-dick-tv NFL dropped from 17.9M to 14.9M views from 2010 to 2020. Other stuff in a similar sports / entertainment category like the WWE also continues to trend downwards from a pure TV views standpoint.
And yet, I feel like the NBA hasn’t dropped in popularity at all. If anything, it seems to be growing. So much of it is online, social media, etc tho and not included in tv ratings. Not to mention the growth internationally, which is also sketchy when measuring via just tv ratings.
The actual attention and eyeballs are not declining imo.
Silver, the NBA, the CBA, advertisers, etc will all eventually adjust and adapt to aligning money with eyeballs.
