Player option incoming via MacMahon:
„ Sources told ESPN that Doncic would likely get a player option for the fifth season, as the Utah Jazz's Donovan Mitchell and Boston Celtics' Jayson Tatum did on their rookie extensions last summer.“

The process is ugly, but the ultimate result is good. If none of this had become public and the Mavs just fired Donnie this week out of nowhere, I think it would have been surprising (just because Donnie had been here for so long), but I don't think anyone would read much into it as far as the overall state of the franchise. In fact, most people would see it as probably a positive sign for the state of the franchise. Donnie deserved to be fired for his job performance the past 3 years. The KP disaster, the 2019 free agency debacle, the JRich/Seth trade, etc. Not adding any Top 50 players to add to your Superstar in over 3 seasons would get most NBA General Managers fired.
Mostly the ugliness comes down to the fact that this was done in a public manner thanks to The Atlantic article in which Donnie and/or his proxies took a behind the scenes war public. It was time to move on from Donnie purely for basketball reasons, but now that he's going scorched earth on the way out the door and waging public media wars shows that it was time for non-basketball reasons too. It's clear from this later article that Cuban was already getting ready to move on from Donnie regardless of what happened this week (ie Finley getting more and more responsibilities as the season went along). If Donnie had earned Cuban's complete confidence the "analytics guy" wouldn't have had the opportunity to usurp him. The story here is much more about Donnie's failings and losing Cuban's confidence than Voulgaris ascent. If Cuban was that enthralled with Voulgaris he could have extended his contract at any time, and even now the Mavs are non-committal about keeping him. Doesn't seem like Cuban is that infatuated with Voulgaris.
It's not the Dirk Era anymore and we need to move on. It's the Luka era. We need the Luka Era General Manager, and very probably the Luka Era Head Coach won't be far behind.

Reminds me of the movie "Draft Day". It's about football, but the FO negotiations are fun to watch and I be have happened in the past to some degree.

That's true, maybe. I think it's Mark's responsibility to make sure everyone know who is in charge of communication with other teams, negoitating trades, and pulling the trigger on those trades. If teams are confused about who to talk to because both Donnie and Bob are calling them, then that's Mark's fault. If either Donnie or Bob are disregarding the order of operations, then Mark has to fix it.
At work I communicate with the same entities as my boss. If I go rogue and communicate things with them that disregard and disagree with the direciton that my boss and I have agreed upon about then he's gonna fix it. And the fix may be firing me.

But might be Cuban did exactly that Of course because Donnie and him are friends for like forever, the decision was not easy. I don't know, but it is one possibility

I'm suggesting that either Mark didn't clearly define the roles in communicating with other teams or that Bob disregarded them. I don't believe that Mark ever told Donnie to stop calling teams because "Bob is doing that now". Either the roles weren't defined, and that's on Mark. Or Mark's buddy disregarded the structure and Mark didn't fix it. That's on Mark.
What you're suggesting is the possibility that Donnie got fired because he didn't like the ambiguity or Bob's disregard for protocall. If that's true, then I think even less of Mark.

Hope you are all still so happy that Salah made the buzzerbeater that cost us our 2019 lottery pick?
What about when we aborted the tank, so we could draft DSJ instead of Tatum, Ball, Isaac or Markkanen?
All these minor things that didn´t really matter, right?
At least we have this awesome (winning) culture.
Damn. I truly have the social skills of Bob.

Prediction: Luka will sign the SuperMax Extension and then start the process of divorcing from Dallas:
Cuban will see it as Luka/Duffy becoming involved in the FO and then, when the dust settles we will look like Cleveland after LBJ left... The 2nd time.

Sheesh so many negative nancys....
Isn't this what y'all wanted? You've been clamoring for Donnie to be fired for ages now. Preaching for some accountability for the last 2 off seasons of failures (and the many free agency whiffs before then).
Now it happens and......the mavs still suck and Luka will almost assuredly leave? Can you just admit the Mavs can do nothing right in your eyes so we don't have to keep up this charade?
My god. Luka is going to be here till 2026 at the least. Take a chill pill as a suppository till then for fast acting relief.

Damn you are pretty grumpy considering nobody has talked about trading Porzingis for at least 48 hours.

True that. I can't actually relate. I don't get the constant giggling about bad moves and mistakes. It's like you're happiest when the Mavs are at their worst.

Hey if you had been right about something for 10 years in the face of heavy head wind, you´d occassionally like to rub it in, too. Unfortunately you don´t have that luxury, when it comes to the MBT.

I actually wouldn't rub it in, but that's me.
But I don't think you actually remember my takes from the last 10 years. I've been called an apologist and a hater. You have this idea that it's all positive vs. negative. You're right and all the positive people are wrong. But that's not how the opinions around here have worked. Lots of people have landed positive on some moves and negative on some moves. There are have been lots of things I didn't like, and said so at the time. But I'm not going to trumpet those opinions like they're some victory.
You trumpet your opinion on things like Satnum Singh as though you were standing alone. I can actually only rmember one person that liked the Singh pick! You list disagreeing with plan powder on your resume. The board was split down the middle on that one. You mention Harison Barnes. That's another board split.
Ultimately I'm here as a fan of the Mavs and because talking Mavs is fun. I'm more hopeful than most by nature, here and in my real life. I'm old enough now that my emotions aren't impacted too much one way or the other with basketball. I spent my emotions on Dirk, and now, having a family requires enough investment that the Mavs get less of me.

I think you see the negativity as a board whole as opposed to the individuals being negative. We all flip flop from negative to positive based on the topics at hand, however, fighting the negative is the constant.
Don't know if that made sense, but in essence I'm saying, it's different people being negative this time around, well, for the most part anyway.

Nice call...
I was starting to think last night about how much the Donnie firing changes everything. Like we have no idea the type of player the new gm will want, they have no loyalty to anyone here, etc.
And I also thought that might extend to the coach. I certainly didn't think Rick would resign right away tho.
I don't think it's Rick not wanting to wait around tho. I think it's more of he knows he doesn't have any protection from the GM now. Things are changing for better or worse. He's butting heads with the star player. He knows the seat is going to start to get warm.
And quite frankly it's a good time for him to be enter the coaching market again.
