I know right?? Magic missed out on his first two years in the league, while Bird made NINE straight first all-NBA team selections from his rookie year. Truly crazy stuff.
Magic did join a better team than Bird which might explain why he missed out.
Lakers before Magic: 47-35, 5th in the West, and made it to the 2nd round of the playoffs.
Lakers after Magic: 60-22, 1st in the West, and won the chip.
Celtics before Bird: 29-53, 10th in the East, and didn't make the playoffs.
Celtics after Bird: 61-21, 1st in the East, and lost in the ECF.
That was the best single season turnaround ever and I think that's largely why he got the praise while Magic had to bide his time.
