Mavs Rookies G-League Watch: Green, Terry, Bey & Hinton

I think this is exactly what you want from Tyrell Terry. In fact I’d like to see him take Burke’s 5 MPG as soon as possible.

Mavs disagree. They were strictly playing him as PG. Which is imho the exact reason he looked so lost, he would look much better as SG with a good PG next to him. But I am sure there are sound reasons they want him to become PG. Which is kind of what Dirkfan (quote below) and myself are wandering. It is one thing to play and another to develop skills team expects you to have. Miami is an excellent example. They put Robinson in g-league with two clear tasks - always guard best opposing player and shoot as much as you can (see the piece below). Of course I have no idea how Mavs develop their g-league guys, but so far I haven't really see a lot of success and the fact that guys play different roles in g-league than what main team expects, is not encouraging. Still hope for the best

I feel like NBA nerds and media are really trying hard to make a "a lot better than expected" narrative out of this NBA rookie class, but these are NBA nerds and media and would honestly find something interesting or intriguing about any new ~30 players that were inserted into the league.   Overall, I think the class has a lot to be desired compared to previous classes, as  was advertised during the draft.   So I'm not going to make a lot out of the Mavs G-League performances, but I'm also not going to make a lot out of 1 game (or even 1 quarter) performances by some players who are a lot of minutes and opportunies on bad teams.   It's just kind of a middling class of talent who have been put even further behind the 8 ball with only .5 a season of college basketball last year and no rookie league, and I don't see any of these guys become major contributors for a NBA Contender within the next 2-3 years except for maybe Halliburton (who was my favorite player in the draft and it broke my heart when the Mavs couldn't move up for him.)

That said, yes I would Saddiq Bey at #18 if we could do it all over again 100 times out of 100.

Terry with a great 2nd quarter! Locking down Kuminga on defense(Yes the projected top5 pick, 6ft8 guy) and a great sequence with a three, a nice layup and assist, after that they were giving him the Luka treatment on defense(Always someone next to him, even if he is 50ft from the basket) Smile

Watched a few of his games and he is making the right play most of the time, and many of those can't be seen in the boxscore, just the right reads and giving the teammates great positions(hockey and potential assists)

Still don't understand the nightly Brick City Burke cameos when Green could really use that experience then gradually progress. Yeah, it's like 5-8 mins max but in those mins Green will at least hustle his ass off and provide energy, which can be rewarded with more minutes over time plus more confidence for a young player.

Also, hope Bey gets unleashed at some point, I thought his defense was NBA ready (Green too) and he'd see more time. Might need to wait for that James Johnson (or KP) trade.

Here are the highlights from Terry yesterday.   One thing is for certain, him being able to get into the lane and finish is something to be very excited about.   Finishing in the real NBA will be tougher but some players just have a knack of using their body and finishing in the lane.

I would like to see him shoot a little better from three.  He is at 37% but for some reason if feels like he is shooting worse.   I would also like to see a little higher assists numbers but I haven't been able to watch any of the whole games, so don't want to make this a negative.

"Thumb soreness" or "thumb included in tradeness?"

Looks like a rough night from Bey.   Green looked to have a solid game.  I would like to see him getting to the line though.  With his strong body, he needs to finish better at the rim.  But he also has to use it to create contact.   Those are two parts of his game I want him to work on.

Nice game from Hinton.  IMO he is probably a G-League player next year again.  But I am curious if he can develop into a Raja Bell type player.   Needs to be able to hit open threes.

Bey’s box score is the one that gives me hope. Nellie used to say that rebounding always translates well from lower levels to higher levels.  The wingspan and rebounding should actually give him a spot on the current roster. I don’t care if he cannot score much right now. But we are obsessed with 3 pt shooting.
