2020-2021 ROSTER TALK: Archived

I think that KP, with his contract, etc., makes the most sense with a rebuilding team. If you're rebuilding, you want to take a flier on a guy who is still young and might one day be worth his contract. You have to pay somebody. If he continues to suck the rest of his contract, then no harm done - he helped your tanking process in the course of rebuilding.

Especially a rebuilding team in a small market that doesn't have the ability to attract premium free agents.

Bill Simmons and Ryen Rusillo played a game on a recent podcast where they took turns "drafting" the best 2 players on every franchise, and San Antonio was dead last.    I can't say I disagree ... I would probably take Jonathon Isaac and some other Orlando player (Fultz?) over  Dejounte Murray and Derrick White.     They're a team of 4th and 5th best players on a contender.   They're drafting 12th.    They're not gong to get another Lamarcus Aldridge type free agent there in the post Duncan/Ginobli era.    How do they get All Star talent there other than to take a buy low chance on a damaged goods player like KP and hope to turn his career around?  What else are they going to use that money on?   Give Jakob Poeltl a max contract?

Considering that you're a successful gambler, I would somewhat question your math there.

I take your point about D being important between Luka and DeRozan, and this won't be popular, but...I kind of think the catch-and-shoot part of "3 and D" might be the MORE important thing.

It helps when DoDo has raised his 3P% to around 38% and Maxi shoots at 40%.     But Luka is the only player on this roster who can score in the post, and that's not good at all.

I agree.

Just don't want to create new problems by solving current ones. We'll see what happens. I'm definitely not saying I know DeRozan would be a bad fit. I'm just worried about it.

That's been an annual tradition! Maybe Nico and Kidd can help change that.

Also with DeRosan is we know with his current contract he is untradable. If we give him what he wants, we will be in SA’s position with him if he doesn’t do what people think he’ll do here. If we were to get him for a more reasonable amount like $18M per, if he isn’t working out here that isn’t such a hard contract to move.

I also saw lots of potential in his shooting stroke and his BBIQ (quickly making the right and smart play with or without the ball). His ceiling IMO is higher than anyone not named Luka and KP on the roster. I think his ceiling is as a "third star"....not saying that is LIKELY, but a possibility.

I agree Green has is an incredible raw defensive guard and he has shown the ability to make some cerebral instinctual reads when push comes to shove. However, he's still incredibly limited. He was resigned to sit in the corner for much of his time here because of how limited his offensive game is. He can never be a starter unless he develops a consistent shot.

As for "third star" ceiling I just can't see that. Perhaps solid guard off the bench is as far as I'm willing to go based on last season. I hope he proves me wrong.

I'm sorry Kamm but what? Tyrell showed quickness and ability to get to the rim more than you anticipated? Did we see the same games? He had a total of 16 shots on the year and made 5 of them. He is as incomplete of a prospect as I've ever seen with no discernable skills. He barely got any run but in the garbage time he did play he looked petrified being on the court and largely disappeared. And disappearing in garbage time is a helluva thing to do.

To put in perspective, Brunson was a 33rd pick and managed to surpass Terry's shot total in his 2nd game as a pro.

I really do think that Terry will be out of this league by the end of next season.

Did you watch him in the GLeague?

P.S. I am just saying I see promising basketball skill in Tyrell....but I think he has A LOT of hurdles ahead of him.

All I know is that when @"Kammrath" gets on board with a player whose wingspan is less than 6'9" or so...well, that's a player we should keep around.

How much will Oubre cost?

I would not hate him on the MLE off the bench. That greatly improves our forward rotation off the bench. I prefer Batum in that role. I like Otto if he's cheap enough but not on the MLE.

But we do need forward help and on the right deal, I think he'd be a good get.
I also would then trade him first chance I get on said deal... So I'm not THAT big of a fan.

Just highlights. I don't find GLeague play is reliable enough to see what guys can and cannot do in the NBA.

Tyrell looked a lot more confident there though, I'll say that. We'll see next season. If he turns in another disappointing outing he'll be cut most likely.

A pretty penny most likely. For the MLE/JRich money I wouldn't mind him though. He is as streaky as it gets and his defensive effort wanes at times. A good bench piece but if he's starting for us we have problems.

They seem to be spinning this where Miami sees THJ is a fallback to other priorities. Still, it's interesting to see his name linked elsewhere. I wonder if this is the first sign that Dallas FA priorities are starting to shift.

I don't hate the Derozan idea or love it either.  He solves some issues (can get buckets on his own and has shown some playmaking for others of late) but he also doesn't help you space the floor or give you and defensive impact.  Seems like a realistic target though.

Miami has been one of the teams that I think might be the biggest threat to sign THJ.

I personally love the idea of a SNT with them for Dragic and Precious.

Short term fix for 6th man in Dragic and you get a small asset in Precious. Keeps an easy path open to a max slot next summer.
