A good quality for an individual person to have is the ability to be humble about one's faults even when that person has many strengths. And the opposite is obviously a bit of a character flaw. If someone told me "hey, do you realize that you've borrowed money from me several times without paying me back", it wouldn't really help that relationship for me to say "well, I pay all my bills on time."
The same can true for a country. It would be admirable, and bring healing to relationships, for the U.S. to have the ability to talk honestly about her faults rather than dismissing those faults by hiding behind good the we have done.
