While the Miami Heat can still get to a max slot if necessary, Bam Adebayo’s extension makes that significantly more painful since they will start the 2021 offseason with about $24 million in space and no contracts for players they are happy to move. That $24 million will likely go down as well because both Duncan Robinson and Kendrick Nunn should reach the starter criteria this season, which increases both their qualifying offer and cap hold from $2.1 million each to about $4.7 million, wiping out another $5 million in spending power. Right, but this is referring to their original plan to ADD Giannis to the great team they have in place. THAT is no longer possible, now that they've extended Adabayo.
To get to a max slot, they'd have to say goodbye to Robinson, Nunn, Herro...pretty much everyone but Butler and Adabayo. That's why I said it would hurt. Still, it's possible, and all of their guys are very movable. There's a Pelton quote about how they could do it a few pages back, I think.
Alternatively, they could keep all of those guys and make Adabayo available. The line for him would form to the left.
