Dwight Powell is a great example of this. For the first few years on the Mavs his #s were awful in the PNR. And then he become an absolute weapon in the PNR. It's a matter of timing, setting the screens in the right spots and how to react to how the defense defends it. That takes time to learn.
I think the big difference is Simmons ability to put the ball on the floor. Cannot really double or trap Luka in that case. The Mavs struggled to create something in easy 4vs3 situations. Put Simmons in the short roll position or at the top of the key and he finds the open shooter or takes it to the rim (at least pre Hawks series meltdown). Playing the Draymond role.
Agree that he wouldn´t be the traditional lob catching pick and roll threat.
