Starting job. Has to be role related. No other explanation.

So that begs the question, WHO is the mystery player that's starting for the Mavs?
Because lets say hypothetically the Mavs kept DJJ and signed Marshall, DJJ would've still been the starter.

Turns out, there are no rules in NBA free agency.
It's a wild wild west.

Gotta be about starting. The state income tax (I know, I know..) diff alone prob makes the Marshall deal better than the DJJ deal with LAC.

I will say, I don't think DJJ looks nearly as playable on the Clippers with Harden+Kawhi as he did next to Luka and Kyrie.

The Los Angeles Clippers are now hard capped to the $171.3 million apron since they'll be using the $12.8 million non-taxpayer mid-level on Derrick Jones Jr.
They are about $16 million below that threshold with 11 players rostered. They still have the $4.7 million Bi-Annual and whatever is left of the MLE to spend.
Yossi has a typo here. 1st apron is 178.1 not 171.3

He just doubled his career earnings on one deal. Good for him!

What could they get to contract wise for Klay if they sent Mann out? Harden, Kawhi, Zu, DJJ doesn’t need Mann as the 5th starter. DJJ plays the same role Mann does.

a bigger market and a bigger role weighs more than the few extra millions in his decision to go there imho. there's a reason we didn't hear this before George was officially out of clippers tbh. djj must think he can play a significant role there with George out and Leonard constantly injured tbh.

Mann makes about 11.5 mil. The Clippers roster right now with DJJ+KPJ as signings are sitting at a total team salary of 176,102,361. That gives them about 2 mil of space with 13 players signed so far.
Klay could make at most about 11mil in such a SnT if its only Mann outgoing. If they send out Norman Powell, Klay could make a whole lot more.

That was fast, and DJJ signed for less than I expected. Great value for the Clippers. The Marshall signing must have been more of a choice than a reaction by Nico. I hope the Mavs didn’t try to save $2 million for a has been and end up losing their best defensive player. A straight trade of Josh plus DJJ for Klay and Marshall looks pretty dumb to me — and I’ve been consistently praising this team’s moves beginning with the Kyrie trade. But not tonight. I’m ready for Omax to step up and make all of this moot, or I expect tonight will be a costly one for the Mavs. The Mavs will be a far less athletic team next season.

This sucks. Did we get impatient and pivot to an inferior player for similar money, or was he just unwilling to take that same money to stay here? Guess we'll never know, but it makes me mad as fuck. The guy seemed like a great teammate and fit perfectly with what we needed, and he showed up big in the big moments. I don't know who to blame but I'm really disappointed that he didn't sign for more and we let him walk. And it's the fucking Clippers so we'll probably end up seeing him in the playoffs. Damnit Damnit Damnit.
Thanks for your service DJJ blah blah blah fuckingfuckfuck!

I think if you were to ask the Mavs and get an honest answer, they'd tell you that they believe Marshall is a superior player. When both sides of the ball are tallied up, they're probably right.
Every move they've made or have been rumored to be trying to make has been about improving on the offensive side of the ball (while trying to maintain as much defense as possible, admittedly). From a bird's eye view, it's the right strategy.
I just think what Jones did down the stretch and in the Playoffs for this team has suddenly become so underrated around here, that's all.
Nothing they've done yet is terrible.

DJJ gets to start with LAC. Mavs want to improve their starting five (and that includes me as a fan) and must've told him that he would be coming off the bench.

probably not in the playoffs. few teams are gonna blatantly tank next season in the West, even the spurs will look legit. making the playoffs may be a tough task for the clippers without George imho.
