Well done. That fits everything I've read tonight.  Just include Miami also removing the restrictions on the pick they already owe OKC, and I bet that's the deal.

Here is Hollinger's write-up on how this might work.  It almost has to be Johnson, Winslow and either Olynyk or Waiters.  I went with Olynyk because I thought Johnson AND Waiters was too big a price to pay for getting Winslow.  But, even if it is Waiters, I have to admire what Memphis is doing.  This is straight out of the Cuban playbook.  Take on what will be expiring contract(s) a year from now to get a guy you want.  How well does Winslow fit with JJJ, Clark, Morant, Brooks and Valanciunas.    The bench behind those six isn't bad either.

As we roll into the final hours before the trade deadline, the evidence would appear to show that the Miami Heat have two separate deals lined up – a two-way trade with Memphis for Andre Igoudala that is already agreed on, and a yet-to-be-completed three-way trade with Oklahoma City and Memphis that nets them both Iguodala and Danilo Gallinari. One would further assume that the Heat have the same players and assets going to Memphis either way, which is why they were already able to agree to a two-year, $30 million extension with Andre Iguodala.

An extension like this must be done before a trade, and will be only the third extend-and-trade transaction in league history (Carmelo Anthony and Kevin Garnett were the others). The only variable is whether they can then turn into a three-way deal with Oklahoma City for Gallinari. But who is in the deal? It appears we can suss that out, too.
The two-way deal between Memphis and Miami is pretty straightforward – Miami sends Justise Winslow and two unwanted contracts to the Grizzlies in return for Iguodala, Jae Crowder and Solomon Hill. It’s reasonable to assume Crowder and Hill are the other two players going to Miami since they were held out of Memphis’ game at the last minute Wednesday night. It’s also reasonable to assume they’d be headed to Oklahoma City in a potential three-way deal since nothing has leaked about where they’re headed yet (As opposed to Iguodala, who immediately learned he’s going to Miami and already agreed to an extension.).

Note that Miami could potentially include a second-round pick in 2022 (the lesser of Denver or Philadelphia’s) in a swap with Memphis – the only draft pick Miami could put into a two-way trade with Memphis. The other two players in this construction are likely some combination of the unpalatable contracts of James Johnson and Dion Waiters, and the expiring ones of Kelly Olynyk and Meyers Leonard. But wait, there’s more. In order to follow that trade up with one where Crowder and Hill go to Oklahoma City for Gallinari – a palatable deal for the Thunder if enough draft compensation comes with it, since those two can replace some of Gallinari’s minutes and the deal puts the Thunder below the tax line – the Heat need to come up with $39.8 million in contracts.

Keep in mind, that total includes the unlikely incentives in the deals for Waiters ($1.21 million) and Olynyk ($400,000). Winslow makes $13.3 million, so we need another $27.5 million among the remaining two players. Only one player gets you even halfway there – James Johnson. He has to be in the deal. Johnson plus Leonard still leaves you short, so scratch him. It has to be either Kelly Olynyk or Dion Waiters as the other Heat player. Given that Olynyk played 22 minutes on Wednesday night while Waiters and Johnson were held out of the game, it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to conclude that Johnson and Waiters appear to be the ones going to Memphis.
If so, it’s quite a price to pay for acquiring Winslow. The Grizzlies would take on nearly $30 million in payroll next season (presuming Johnson picks up his $16 million player option) for two players who are unlikely to figure in their rebuild. Adding those contracts plus Winslow’s and the just-inked extension to guard Dillon Brooks (a solid deal at three years, $35 million, per ESPN) will take the Grizzlies entirely out of 2020 cap space when they started the day with a potential $55 million in room (including cap holds for Brooks and DeAnthony Melton). The other half of the Gallinari piece, as I mentioned earlier, almost certainly involves Miami rewriting protections on the 2023 first-round pick it owes the Thunder (currently top-14 protected).

Enabling the pick to convey in either 2023 or 2024 would allow Miami to insert another first-round pick in 2025, which one would think would provide ample temptation to compel the Thunder to do the trade. Those protections are likely the final piece to the puzzle, and one the two sides may haggle over until shortly before the deadline buzzer. (JH)
