don't think he's a slouch on defense, but I do think KP is much better on D than KAT is

KAT defensive numbers:

-2.91 DRPM (For comparison, Trae Young who had the worst DRPM ever last year is sitting with -3.67 this year.)
Opponents are shooting 61% around the rim with KAT guarding them. 58% in the restricted area. KAT barely averages above a block a game his entire career. He consistently puts forth lackluster effort on the defensive end. 

KAT is just not a consistent defensive player. He's shown he can use his size and have flashes of good defensive play, but he's also just as likely to take 5 plays off where he barely puts up any resistance, and it's really hard to build around a guy like that. Yet, KAT is still an otherworldly player that I would love to have. His offensive talent more than makes up for his defensive deficiencies, kind of like how Luka operates. 

KP funnily enough is in theory the perfect ballast to KAT. He's so good on his defensive rotations that he lifts everyone's defensive potential. I know this is all conjecture and we're not going to trade KP but I think KP is about as untouchable as Luka imo. We just saw him average 23 and 14 the week Luka was out and the Mavs could have easily gone 4-1 against the gamut of the best the East has to offer. If that's the potential KP has, I think we should all give him the year to get back.   

I just think the head to head between KAT and KP is trading better defense for better offense, and because KP's defense is the glue for this team I think it'd hurt way more than help in a theoretical swapping of KP for KAT. Mavs should try to go all out though to add KAT to this core, no matter how unrealistic it'd be. That'd be a super team that'd rival the KD-Warriors.

For now he's happy, so long as we're winning is basically his quote, not that we will start losing, and not that if we do start losing he would be unhappy, just the facts as we know them to this day.

Also I forgot to touch on this. KP was responding about his role in the offense and how he doesn't care he's not getting the same looks he got in NY because we're winning. And KP is all about winning. 

Obviously winning cures everything. If the Mavs go on a terrible losing streak that means something is wrong and should be fixed, and KP is being underutilized in the offense. But the mere threat of KP opens everything up for everyone else. Should the Mavs go on a losing streak, giving KP a bigger role would be my first move, as KP astutely pointed out.
