IMO, the Mav’s problem is they are always negotiating from a position of weakness. We have been on the “maybe next year” train for so long that we have built up a bunch of assets that are undervalued relative to what we need/seek. Personally, I don’t see ANY scenario where we will be truly competitive with the better teams next year.
Instead of continuing this insanity (what is the saying about insanity), I prefer they get rid of the dead weight and focus on youth and projected upside, regardless of ideal fit. If that means we are slightly under resourced at a position, so be it…that’s the cost of the maybe next year mindset.
I would look for players who are younger and solid defensively but have underperformed offensively. We have seen that an advantage Luka provides is improvement on the offensive end. I believe that is an advantage that hasn’t been leveraged enough. Is it realistic to believe that defense deficient players like Curry (who I like), Wood, Bertans, etc. etc., are going to enhance their market value with the Mav’s? IMO, flipping the script is the best way for us to develop players and operate from a position of strength during the Luka years.
