The case for not hatin’ Ayton:
1. Most of his cost before year 3 may be money we’ve already spent (McGee, Holmes, etc.).
2. Year 3—the bulk of the real cost of obtaining him—he’ll be a moveable expiring (like Kristaps to Boston).
3. Young centers often improve over time and blossom, sometimes after leaving their first team (Tyson, DeAndre, even Shaq and Kareem).
4. He’s a good shooter from the free-throw line and, therefore, has real potential (my opinion) from the 3-point line.
5. He sure looks like a fit for our biggest holes (rebounds, rim protection, post defense, physicality).
Also have to be impressed with the Mavs playing hard to get here. Suns are desperate.
