Good example of Luka going through the reads of all the off ball action while he’s posting up. This action looks pretty clean and I think your last resort of Luka simply backing someone down is a pretty great last resort. Hopefully as this offball action continues to get smoother it will feel less and less like Luka doing everything.

Agreed. I like how this plays to Hardaway's strengths, for sure.

This may be applicable to the Mavs as a template - or it may be applicable as something to consider that you might have to deal with.

This is a good one. The cavs have been successful (so far) with the 2 big style. Boston has had actual success and looks like the best team. I think the key with the new style big is they MUST be able to guard the perimeter. They can be just ok rim protectors. They don’t have to be shooters. But they need to be able to rotate out to the 3pt line or they will not play at some point in the playoffs.

Came across this gem of a video today. It tracks the evolution of the NBA game through the years, and isn’t a bad way to spend 30 minutes if you have that much time to spare.

That changed my whole perception of how good today’s players are compared to the days of my youth. Didn’t remember how ridiculous the illegal defense rules were in particular.
Pessimism doesn’t make you smart, just pessimistic.

More basketball nerd greatness from our friend JJ Redick here. Also, Cam Johnson seems really smart to me.

Wait for the double/trap and read the weak siide defender. Sounds so easy but the only two players that are doing this stuff on a similar level are Jokic and LBJ. All three with a rare combination of scoring threat, handles, vision, size and patience. Haven't seen a player that is as comfortable being doubled as Luka. Most players would give up the ball as quickly as possible but he just waits for the second defender to come over or for the weak side defender to pick between the open guy in the corner or the guy in the top of the key/FT line area.

Here’s a great discussion about what makes an NBA athlete effective, with specific conversation about Luka.

I concur. I listened to that last night. I think we used to have discussions about that in the past, when folks would say that Dirk wasn't athletic, that speed and jumping ability aren't the only forms athleticism. But we didn't fill out the conversation as much as they did in that podcast. I like listening to just about anything JJ puts out. He's a good.

This exactly. Hardaway is a movement shooter ala JJ Redick, though not nearly as good at it. Guys like Exum simply can’t replicate this. I’m not sure Hardy even can tbh. Remains to be seen. I think he’ll get there eventually but Hardaway has great lift and timing on that type of shot. Kyrie too. It requires a rare combination of balance, footwork, focus, reps, timing and of course skill.

I've been slacking lately, but there have been a ton of great analysis videos of what the Mavericks are doing well down the stretch. Everyone should be following this guy and Grant Aseth.
