2023 DRAFT: June 22 | Mavs to pick 10th

Doesn´t make much of a difference whether you spend the MLE on the next Reggie Bullock, Delon Wright or Josh Richardson, when your team is in desperate need of more high end talent. When you have no assets the only way is the draft.

The only reason to trade down is that you are 100% convinced that your BPA will be available 4-5 spots later and you can extract extra value from a trade down. Doing it to gain some short-term financial flexibility is once again atrocious short-sighted decision-making.

True.

There's a scenario the Mavs can get a pick like Jake LaRavia, get some rotation help like Theis and also shed a contract like McGee's in one fell swoop.
But a missed opportunity of having a player on a rookie contract like Jalen Williams is going to sting.

Hendricks is playing a position of need for the Mavs. That alone should be reason enough to keep him.
The same goes for Walker.
Black is a playmaker in a wing's body -- also positions of need. But that type of talent he has, is unmistakable. You don't pass on him or trade down from him. Period.

Mavs should NOT approach the draft with the mind set of "what could we get for 10 in exchange", but rather, be open to keep the pick if the pick is a perfect fit or the level of talent is too obvious.

It's just me, but my gut feeling is that the Mavs (Cuban most likely), already predetermined they'd trade down/trade out regardless who's available unless the guy available is a consensus top 5.

I'm pretty resigned that they're trading the pick.

I don't think on the face of it that it's the correct move.

I´d rather figure out why Presti or Ainge desperately want to trade up to #10. Who is the players they can´t wait for at #12 or #15. Then pick that guy.

Ah, the life of a Mavs' fan. Pretty much any of us could do a better job running the team than our current owner. And I don't even mean that as irony.

It's not like cheap rookie scale contracts are going to be valuable in the new CBA or anything.  Dodgy

Yes, the #10 pick starts at $4m. Aren’t we paying Javele more than that?! Just pick the BPA and you have him on a cost-controlled deal. If he pans out, you have him for a decade.

So can he play? A guy I passed over as a mid/late second round pick or priority undrafted guy is UCONN big man, Adama Sanogo. I thought he was the bully who could dominate in college due to his size and age. And that well very well be the case, but I was wondering if he could stick around as a role player. He is not a shot blocker and most of the clips don't show if he can move his feet on defense. So that will probably be the skill that will decide if he is an nba player.

His postives are:
1) was a leader and final four outstanding player on championship team
2) has very good hands
3) Is built like a truck
4) while not explosive he does appear to have a nice solid touch
5) Has become a decent three point shooter and his free throw shooting has gotten better each year

Much as I hate the idea of trading down from a very solid drafting range, the fact of the matter is that this is a threadbare roster, with lots of junk cluttering things up. If the Mavs could get a solid rotation player and then still get Lively (who ought to be able to make an impact on this team as a rookie considering how miserably bad the frontcourt and defense are), I understand the move. The main reason I'm still shaking my head about it is that while this team has become trustworthy with drafting when they do, they have become very bad with whom they target in trade - not to mention in trade negotiations. I'm bracing for impact on the trade because I no longer trust them with trades.

I would argue this team has had mixed results both in trading and in drafting.  Technically Luka was a trade.  The Jury is still out on the Kyrie trade.  The last pick we had around 10 was a bust and Green has been ok but the guys folks wanted instead (Bane, Bey and Maxey) have all been better. What this team has been truly bad at is free agency.
