2023 DRAFT: Mavs take Lively, OMP, sign Mike Miles to 2-way, sign Jordan Walker
(06-07-2023, 08:37 AM)Mavs2021 Wrote: Also makes a difference whether you draft the next Giannis or the next Shane Larkin. Tongue

Doesn´t make much of a difference whether you spend the MLE on the next Reggie Bullock, Delon Wright or Josh Richardson, when your team is in desperate need of more high end talent. When you have no assets the only way is the draft.

The only reason to trade down is that you are 100% convinced that your BPA will be available 4-5 spots later and you can extract extra value from a trade down. Doing it to gain some short-term financial flexibility is once again atrocious short-sighted decision-making.

True.

There's a scenario the Mavs can get a pick like Jake LaRavia, get some rotation help like Theis and also shed a contract like McGee's in one fell swoop.
But a missed opportunity of having a player on a rookie contract like Jalen Williams is going to sting.

Hendricks is playing a position of need for the Mavs. That alone should be reason enough to keep him.
The same goes for Walker.
Black is a playmaker in a wing's body -- also positions of need. But that type of talent he has, is unmistakable. You don't pass on him or trade down from him. Period.

Mavs should NOT approach the draft with the mind set of "what could we get for 10 in exchange", but rather, be open to keep the pick if the pick is a perfect fit or the level of talent is too obvious.

It's just me, but my gut feeling is that the Mavs (Cuban most likely), already predetermined they'd trade down/trade out regardless who's available unless the guy available is a consensus top 5.

I'm pretty resigned that they're trading the pick.

I don't think on the face of it that it's the correct move.

I´d rather figure out why Presti or Ainge desperately want to trade up to #10. Who is the players they can´t wait for at #12 or #15. Then pick that guy.

Ah, the life of a Mavs' fan. Pretty much any of us could do a better job running the team than our current owner. And I don't even mean that as irony.

It's not like cheap rookie scale contracts are going to be valuable in the new CBA or anything.  Dodgy

Yes, the #10 pick starts at $4m. Aren’t we paying Javele more than that?! Just pick the BPA and you have him on a cost-controlled deal. If he pans out, you have him for a decade.

So can he play? A guy I passed over as a mid/late second round pick or priority undrafted guy is UCONN big man, Adama Sanogo. I thought he was the bully who could dominate in college due to his size and age. And that well very well be the case, but I was wondering if he could stick around as a role player. He is not a shot blocker and most of the clips don't show if he can move his feet on defense. So that will probably be the skill that will decide if he is an nba player.

His postives are:
1) was a leader and final four outstanding player on championship team
2) has very good hands
3) Is built like a truck
4) while not explosive he does appear to have a nice solid touch
5) Has become a decent three point shooter and his free throw shooting has gotten better each year

Much as I hate the idea of trading down from a very solid drafting range, the fact of the matter is that this is a threadbare roster, with lots of junk cluttering things up. If the Mavs could get a solid rotation player and then still get Lively (who ought to be able to make an impact on this team as a rookie considering how miserably bad the frontcourt and defense are), I understand the move. The main reason I'm still shaking my head about it is that while this team has become trustworthy with drafting when they do, they have become very bad with whom they target in trade - not to mention in trade negotiations. I'm bracing for impact on the trade because I no longer trust them with trades.

I would argue this team has had mixed results both in trading and in drafting.  Technically Luka was a trade.  The Jury is still out on the Kyrie trade.  The last pick we had around 10 was a bust and Green has been ok but the guys folks wanted instead (Bane, Bey and Maxey) have all been better. What this team has been truly bad at is free agency.

Feels like Wallace is going to WAS. They don't need the other forwards with Kuzma and KP there, good fit with Beal.

We just paid a whole lot of money to a guy that went 9-29 (31%) on FG and 3-20 (15%) 3-pt% in both our win or go home elimination games last couple of playoffs. SMH

I'd love it if Hendricks fell to us. It's all academic since there's no way we're keeping that pick, but I like several guys who could fall to that pick for the Mavs. I saw one mock that had us take Lively at 10. The only thing that would be worse than that would be trading down to acquire a rotation player, and some team takes Lively ahead of our new position.

My dream scenario for this draft is that we keep 10 and get either Walker or Hendricks, and trade for a mid-teens pick for Lively. Rookie contracts! But that's not going to happen.

Denver is in the finals and still making deals.

My hope list right now if we keep the pick:

1) Black
2) Walker

I have not come to a firm conclusion on Ausur or Hendricks yet, but I would guess I would be fine with either. Will update if that is incorrect.

Like Cason Wallace- but just not sure how fitting another smaller player works long term
Like Dereck Lively- But can't justify #10 at this point. He may well be worth that in time though
Like Dick- He just wouldn't be my prime option at 10 regardless who is there. Therefore, I will prefer others.
Don't know enough about Bilal yet

I saw your mock draft and it got me wondering. What if we go the opposite direction. Yeah we keep Kyrie, but we trade Maxi, THJ and Bullock.

Trade 1: Cody Martin + #34 + #39 + #41 for THJ

Trade 2:  Bamba + Harrison + #17 for Kleber + McGee + #34 + #39 +#41. You can likely pick between Dereck Lively, Leonard Miller and Brice Sensabaugh.

Trade 3: Daniel Theis + #26 for Reggie Bullock. That´s still within Dariq Whitehead´s range, who was projected top 5 in this class out of high school.

Get the full MLE to go after a wing defender. Move the unprotected 2029 1st with Bertans for Capela in January?

New Mavs play-off roster:

Doncic/Hardy/Pinson
Irving/Green/Lawson
McDaniels/Whitehead/Martin
Theis/Hendricks/Miller
Capela/Bamba/Powell

This makes sense for both teams.  Unfortunately “the worst of” the OKC 2024’s was something I had posted in OKC trade down ideas.  You’d be assured of having a 24 pick that way.  Now that opportunity is gone.

In the Coach Spin appearance on the Hardwood Knocks podcast, he spoke really highly of OMP and Cissoko as players he rates more highly than consensus.

I can only watch so much Taylor Hendricks. That kid is going to be a star. Just a question whether, he´ll be a superstar. By the end of year two he´s better than whoever veteran (Turner/Capela) we trade that pick for. You'd have to offer me an All-Star to trade him. I´d also keep Black, though I´m worried how well his strength and weaknesses would mesh with Luka/Kyrie. You can look on the bright side of total darkness: he´d be a perfect backcourt partner for the Hardy era, once Luka/Kyrie leave.

The one I´m really torn on is Jarace Walker and I think he´ll be the one falling to #10.

This is how I see it going.

#9 was supposed to be Hendricks.

I haven’t watched enough of Hendricks, but I know he is a favorite among Mavs fans.

The not top rated hs prospect who goes to a small school always gives me concern.  Not saying those guys are never turn out to be stars and I know he wanted to play with his twin brother.  But those prospects always force me to take a closer look.

I can understand some question on Walker.  I like him but I could see a scenario where he can’t play small ball center and not really able to guard wings for long stretches.  I think he will be able but those are legit questions.  Also will he ever be able to score 15 a game?

I'm on the other side with Hendricks... I hope the Mavs pass on him. I get that he looks promising with the combination with his size and agility/shooting, but for me he just isn't the defensive prospect people are saying he is. Watching UCF games, he was just out of position lots of times. I have Black and Walker as a tier or two better defensive prospects than Hendricks. He is basically a DFS/Maxi hybrid on ofense, with questionable defensive instincts(that just my opinion!). I get the hype, but I fear that he'll end up as Jaxon Hayes.

On the other hand, I am a huge fan of Jarace Walker, his defensive/basketball IQ is just absurd. He was on the right spot most of the time, his positioning on defense reminds me a lot of a young Draymond. He was the defensive anchor for one of the best defensive teams in NCAA last year. In addition to those instincts, he also has some elite athleticism. He has everything necessary for being a all devensive team player. Also an elite/great playmaker/passer(go watch some of his IMG tape). Jarace is my top choice for Mavs @10
