STEIN: "Consistent signals emanating from Dallas leading up to this surge [from Christian Wood] have suggested that an extension is unlikely”
Consistent signals (ie, this isn't new). Leading up to (ie, this was already the case BEFORE the recent shift in Wood's minutes and production).
So, regarding the extension that looks so unlikely ...
It would be interesting to know the why (is he demanding more than 17M? or is the next deal he wants allowed within the 17M extension limit, but the Mavs don't think he's worth whatever his number is?).
It would also be interesting to know the when (was any extension always going to be less than he would accept? or was there ever a window when an extension would have been possible, but Mavs didn't offer it).
It would also be interesting to know the so then what the Mavs are operating under (are the Mavs still hoping an extension might happen and working toward that end? or are the Mavs trying to raise his trade value? or are the Mavs working to try to make him a true max player so that it would make sense to re-sign him at his number in the summer, whatever it might be? or are they hoping that the market for him is lower than he is expecting in the summer where they can get him at a number they like, but that he currently thinks is too low?)
