It’s not a “third best player” they’re looking for when they say “3rd guy” or “3rd Star.” There is a specific type of player they want who can play a specific role, and it is not the role that most of the posters here seem to think should be at the forefront of their plans.
They identified Kemba Walker as that player last summer. If you want to criticize them for not closing that deal, that’s valid, but I don’t. The names we’re starting to hear now are similar. If your criticism is based on disagreement with their assessment of what they need, then you are going to be extremely disappointed again this time around, I think.
No, you and I are on a similar page when it comes to what their overall strategy ought to be this offseason. My whole post there was attacking the "2019 was just fine" narrative, when I think that 2019 crippled the team and put them into a much worse situation than what they should be in.
Kemba was not a bad target. It's definitely a Dantoni approach; i.e. who needs any defense whatsoever. I do think the Mavs deserve blame for not closing the deal. OK, he wanted to go to Boston more - then you have to look at and correct the basic outlines of why that was, and more importantly, you have to have a rock solid PLAN B to fall back on, which they very obviously didn't. Huge eff-up.
Rubio is lame, but he plays OK defense. It's just an extremely meh get. As far as Levine, et al., I suppose an all-offense-all-the-time approach works if you can keep enough cap open that GA is your finishing move. In recent days, the only rumored target that has been dynamically irritating is Dinwiddie. No defense and no threes? I'd probably rather have Derozan to be our midrange closer at the end of games.
