Complementary players are nice to identify. But looking back at former drafts, the key is to identify the one or two stars available in each years draft.
I believe the key characteristic is the feel for the game, bbIQ. Ability to perform adjustment to new unusual situation, things that cant be thought in practice well. And typically that they cant be guarded one on one by different defensive players. All of them will need adjustments in the NBA, hence the more they have this skill, the better. Defensive players that have no offensive game do not become stars, unless they acquire the skills of course. Any player, no matter how bad in college, can in theory acquire the skills once in the NBA, which makes the whole thing a lot much harder to predict, even impossible due to this. Therefore the key skill probably is the competitive spirit, the will to win, to improve, without this, everything else, every other skill, will not work. Since this can also be hard to identify, who is most competitive, it makes everything again much harder.
To me Haliburton, Sadiq Bey, Kaleb Wesson so far look like having the best potential to become those unstoppable forces that may change the fate of franchises. Role players have impact as well, and if the star player is not identified and drafted, thats one of the next best for sure. Between those two categories, I would place also the good reliable starter role, which I believe Bane will have a good shot at becoming. Still a ton of players I haven't looked at, but those I really feel have some special competitiveness and bbIQ to their game, and have potential. Haliburton and S. Bey are day one starters I believe, while if any NBA teams ever realises Wessons QB like skills on offense and makes the system around him as Denver did with Joker, it will be game over for opponents. This might take years to realise. He is slow, unathletic. Yet same time, perhaps the most intelligent player in the draft with a born feel for the game, the pass and the decision, the shooting. With some players, it becomes quickly obvious they are born to play this game.
