Why is that? He won't fall, but Mavs can't pass on a top-5 talent like that when we're picking at #18. He would immediately start and fill the hole we have at PF. After watching videos, I'm less scared of McDaniels than I am on Poku.
PS: I don't get the love on Woodard (Post-injury/SAS Rudy Gay ceiling) and Reed (work ethic ? I heard he was a locker room problem on DePaul). I know we are in a glaring need of a SF/PF but unfortunately, this draft just doesn't have talent at the wing/forward position besides the top.
Immediately starting? You talking about Toppin? The guy whose college game declaims that he is not going to be physically able to guard a single conceivable NBA player?
Guys who cannot play *any* defense like that don't start for good teams in the 2020s. Amare, who Toppin is not as good as, might not even start in today's NBA. Let New York draft Toppin. Drafting and starting Toppin is like (in the other thread) trading for and starting Drummond. Makes no sense unless we're tanking next year. If Toppin makes a name for himself in the L, it will be as a sixth man.
As you all can see, I'm very high on Terry - but that has everything to do with his reported growth. Prior to that, he looked like the guard version of Toppin - would struggle to guard anyone in the league. I am presuming that his combine and workouts will unveil whole new dimensions to his potentialities, but we don't get to see those. We will see how he turns out in the league, and if he is someone who the Mavs should have traded up for, or drafted at 18, if they didn't, or if he struggles in the league because of the lack of defense. I think he's going to be fantastic on offense regardless.
