Besides, free agency is not a supermarket where you just pick whoever you want. Who says any of those guys you listed wants to come to Dallas. Powell was the only one mentioned as having Mavs on his "wishlist".
Sometimes the best moves are the ones you don't make. I'd argue that almost half of the Mavs roster probably shouldn't be in the league or in the case of the rookies, just aren't ready. We mostly start guys who are probably better off as bench rotational guys. I'd rather the MBT figure out a way to take the 30M for Lowry and turn it into two starting caliber players, preferably at an age with some road left ahead of them.

They might get overpaid for what they are but they can get better. For example Collins will get a max which he is not worth today, but what if he improves to become an allstar. Last year Christian Wood got a big deal but he got better, the same for Jerami Grant and Julius Randle. I don't see Lowry as a good fit with Luka. Luka is a point guard, who needs the ball. Lowry is not a scorer he cannot guard the inside where the Mavs had a layup line last year.

Luka is an overtaxed playmaker who needs another playmaker next to him to ease his load. I once thought as you did. It ain't that way.

Exactly. We need some athletes that can shoot, rebound and catch a lob from Luka. The number one need is someone that can catch a lob and can body up a Giannis type of player.
Top young FA athletes/shooters are:
1.Collins (RFA)
2. Ball (RFA)
3. Allen (RFA)
4. Powell
5. Fournier
6. Oubre
7. Holmes
8.Markannen (RFA)
9. Monk

Don't @ me about the return; I'm presuming Nico's negotiating skills. Then a blockbuster of KP/JRich/Powell/Maxi/DFS/23/25/24 swap for Beal/Bryant/Bertans? Pretty sure we'd still have cap room after that - perhaps even enough to max Collins. Then fill out the team as needed. You have your solid big three.
My thought is that Washington gets out from under Bryant and Bertans, gets two FRPs, and DFS, the hope of rehabbing KP, with JRich and Maxi expiring and Powell being more movable than the two B's. That should be competitive with any other team's offer.
Don't get the Robinson love on this board. He is a project and makes no sense with KP, or in this case in total win now mode with Luka and Beal (not there is any chance that deal happens).

The question is if Luka will relinquish the ball. Both mindsets might be correct.
It's why I think Lonzo isn't an option, playing with Luka will probably limit his potential for bigger contracts down the line. At least that's how I'd view it if I were him.
If we are really going to pay old man river 3/90, I wonder if conversations have been had with CP3. I don't love that thought either and I still don't think he'd leave the Suns, but he's better off ball, a better spot up 3PT shooter and can still get his own shot whenever he wants.

Project, yes. He's a shot blocker that your perimeter defenses can funnel their coverage into. Good rebounder too. Great lob partner. Probably obtainable. Fit with KP is irrelevant in my eyes. KP is hurt a lot and doesn't play 48 minutes a game when he does suit up.

Thats because his usage rate was sky high. He does not need to score 30 ppg. He needs to pass it to teammates who can score, or roll to the basket. The only player who did that last season was Hardaway. The reason was that Dallas ran only 2 plays, drive and layup, or drive and kickout to shooters. They didnt run pick and roll, they didnt run any post ups. They barely cut to the basket. A smallish point guard won't get any of this done.

What if he doesn't? What if he becomes overpaid as KP?

The answer doesn't need to be all or nothing. Jesus. Team building is hard if you act like a kid with a ten dollar bill burning a hole in his pocket. We might as well sign Shaq and Antwan.

But you are acting as if FA is supermarket where you just pick a guy. How do you know any of the moves you would do are really even available? Do you think Mavs are that stupid that they had a sit down, point a finger to Lowry picture and said "bring him in"? I am sure they explored all possible and not possible alternatives. If Lowry is result, I am fine. I accept that every bigger move Mavs will want to do, will be "overpaid".

Different levels of talent and he's still very ball dominant (as he should be). I'm not saying he's not willing to but put yourself in Lonzo's shoes. You had a rocky start to your career and have been playing with a lot of ball dominant dudes. You see your brothers success when he's given the keys. You have the opportunity to be given the keys to a team or you could go play besides Luka. Just from a career earning standpoint, I know what I'd choose.

And please don't missunderstand me. I am not saying it is Lowry or nothing. I am saying I understand the move. There are also other moves I would say the same. And I repeat - convincing Lowry to come is step one. Step two is get creative and do more with contracts we don't really want (JRich, Powell) to keep guys we do want or bring better alternatives.

Yup I love Lonzo Balls potential. Coould be an all star someday. The problem is he is a floor general like Luka and needs the Ball (just like Lowry). He wont sign here if he has to share the Ball

I understand Lowry at less years and dollars. I do NOT understand the move at the number floating around. The Mavs will almost instantly have $60+M a year tied up in maybe two of the worst 5 contracts in the whole NBA. I cannot even fathom how the Mavs could be talking themselves into that.

I actually don't think Lonzo is a ball dominant guard. On Zach Lowe's Podcast yesterday he described him as a supped up Pat Beverly with much higher basketball IQ. Jonathan Givony chimed in that in the draft with Lonzo some execs even wondered if Lonzo was even a point guard. Givony thought at the time that was way off, but it has turned to be true. Lonzo was my favorite player in that draft but he really is not a point guard in todays NBA.
