The only advantage to Kawhi's injury for the Mavs' consideration of signing him is that we have our pick next year.
That is an interesting idea. I doubt you can make a team with Luka so bad it wouldn't be a playoff contender, but what we could do would be to cash on on our role palyers, who are getting old anyway, for young players and picks. Like:
- trade JRich to Utah for Favors and #30
- Maxi to Portland for Jones Jr and Little
- DFS to Indy, Washington or GSW for their FRP
Sign two youngsters for rMLE and BaE and filter what is useful for the season when Kawhi comes back.

I have a tough time seeing Dallas looking past how his last Mavs stint ended, but I don't deny that he would be a good fit on the floor.

I have a tough time seeing the need for him unless at least one of KP and Powell is moved

His main issue with the Mavs was with RC afaik. I know he was butthurt about the "low" (snort) contract offer, but he learned his lesson when he left. I think he'd be a very solid pickup.

I just think he will be out of our price range. I thought he was pretty decent in NY last season. If prices were similar, he would be an easy choice for me over Willie.

Somebody liked Nerlens enough to offer that absurd contract (Cuban). I think the issues, as with a lot of players, were with Dick Carlisle. I would be happy to have Noel back here. He’s been good the last 2 seasons and is still only 27.

Hotdog man biggest issue here was his relationship with RC. I can see him coming back now that Carlisle is gone.

The trick in not paying the max is to make everybody else think they can get away paying less.
I just hope the Mavs stay as far away as possible.
I think they wanted to see the season play out knowing that they could get the same type of offers in the summer as they would have gotten mid-season.

I don't say it isn't possible, but it is sooo much more complicated now.
They need a team that not only wants to overpay but also offer assets and they have JC to want to go there. And if this team does have capspace, they must be really scared of the Hawks matching.

I don't think anyone is scared of the Hawks matching bc they know the Hawks don't want to pay him max or anywhere close to that. I think whichever team he agrees with will send something back to the Hawks in a S&T.

I’m wondering if the smoke with Dinwiddie and Oubre is about the s&t possibilities. GS and BKN being the capped out with very little ways to add rotation pieces. I know a lot of people are out on both of these guys but just considering this scenario…
Sign Dinwiddie for 4/80 - 17.5 starting salary. BKN takes back Powell
Sign Oubre 4/70 - 16.0 starting salary. - GS takes back JRich & Burke
Your left with 17.4 in space. Holmes 4/78?
Luka
Dinwiddie
DFS
KP
Holmes
Oubre
Brunson
Kleber
Just a thought and not sure either BKN or GS does those deals, but the sign&trade route is at least a pathway to adding multiple pieces.

With KP around, absolutely. But, if KP is moved? Man, I can see Noel being exactly the kind of starter they need, priced at a level that allows the team to have the option of removing him during crunch time if/when needed.
It's not the worst idea ever, imo. I was a huge fan of that acquisition when it happened, and I think his stint here going so South was very disappointing for me.

That’s a thought put here (and despite it being BR, Jake Fischer is a reputable reporter): https://bleacherreport.com/articles/2945...his-summer

That feels like dumping two smaller bad contracts for two larger bad contracts.
And if we are going to play KP at the 4, I would rather trade him for air (or even Wiggins).

Is probably (hopefully) agent smoke, using the Mavs as a team with capspace as a way to drum up interest and a market for their clients.

100% should be moving KP for a wing regardless IMO. I don’t disagree with your take, but at the same time you’ve replaced 3 guys (Powell, JRich, Burke) who aren’t good enough to be in a playoff rotation with 3 guys who are.

Has to be. So far we’re linked to….
Kawhi
Collins
Holmes
Dinwiddie
Powell
Noel
Oubre
Which means our target is probably Derozan.
