2020-2021 MAVS NEWS: Archived
Brunson AND a 1st round pick might be a bit too steep IMO. Second and I'm in.

Now whether Dallas would prefer to pay that much for FVV (including the pic) or simply re-sign the guy they have is another matter. The tiebreaker might be Brunson being honest about his goals as a FA. Would he be willing to stay in Dallas or would he prefer to be a starter somewhere else even at the same money? If he doesn't plan to stay, flipping him for FVV could indeed be a very good deal worth considering.
This makes sense. I don’t think JB can become a two way starter on this squad. If that’s his desire, then thanks for the memories and give me FVV

If the Mavs want to give up a 1st I would prefer Lonzo over VanVleet. Lonzo is a bad finisher in the paint but compared to VanVleet he is peak Jordan. VanVleet is a really good onball defender and above average shooter. His shot creation is getting overrated.

Same concept and team. I’d prefer a DFS for OG upgrade

Why would we trade Brunson for FVV when Brunson is FVV but at a lower cost. Brunson is on an uptick to be what FVV is at this point so it makes not sense to do a swap like that. Brunson knows our system and has experience with Luka so I am against any swap like that. The moves that make the most sense is moving Johnson and or Powell for something that can help you in in the playoffs.

I am willing to throw Terry into that mix if it nets us a starter

While we're talking about Toronto, why not think bigger:

Brunson/KP/Johnson for FVV/Siakam

Dallas gets two starters including a clutch secondary ballhandler and a versatile defensive forward. Toronto gets a younger/cheaper FVV starter kit, a unicorn to lead them, and a lot more cap flexibility.

Would you?

Are the Mavs still bad at home this year?

11-9 at home....11-10 on the road.

Can we redo this last offseason where we just trade our 2nd/Wright/Jackson for Danny green and call it a day? I actually thought that was the most realistic trade all summer even tho I liked the idea of a Curry for J Rich swap.

In retrospect Mavs could have still drafted their young prospect (obv Bey would have been better than Josh Green) but shored up defense with Danny Green and kept Curry.

Mavs might have eventually run with Danny Green in the starting lineup with both Curry and THJ coming off the bench. We would be winning these shootout games which Curry loved and other guys fed off of his performance in those games.

Mavs would have less cap space this summer but still enough for a max-ish guy.

Quote:Mavs owner Mark Cuban recently told DallasBasketball.com that the team has no intention of trading Kristaps Porzingis. But that hasn't stopped at least two teams from what a source termed "feeling out'' the concept of trading for KP, as one source puts it.

I like FVV. I like him a lot. He reminds me of JJB but like a suped up version (pun intended).

I don't think TOR would cut loose on him so quick after resigning him. Especially if they're dealing away Lowry come tomorrow.

Assuming this Supes guy does have some sort of insider connection (which is dubious at best), that means TOR could be blowing everything up and is going to try and restart.

Masai has shown he doesn't really care about making the tough move as long as he thinks it makes the team better in the long run. Hypothetically, could this mean Pascal is a bit cheaper than we thought? He's a guy I'd trade multiple firsts for.

Super interesting chart.

Notice that Luka is first in the league among PGs in contested threes....KP is second among Cs to Jokic....among PFs DFS and Maxi get almost as many open looks as Giannis.....and let's all throw our heads back at Wes Matthews for being the "shooting" guard no one actually guards!

Interesting chart. Thanks for posting that! Really shows how there’s a blurred line between positions these days.

I wonder how many of those contested KP 3’s were contested by a 3/4 and not a 5 going out to the arc. Conversely, i wonder how many of Maxi open 3’s have the 5 “guarding” him. Seems like teams have been switching the smaller player to KP every game

it really begs the question too: how can we punish teams that do that? KP’s inside game and PnR. The two man game with Luka. If we can figure that out and somehow “clear the air” with KP-LD-RC we could have something special

Its not popular here, but Maxi is almost the perfect front court partner to KP

Not only for KP. 3&D bigman that can switch onto the perimeter but also offers some rim protection. Not a suprise that he is mentioned in trade rumors. Perfect role player for the modern NBA.

Here are the things on my mind, personally:

1) FVV isn’t old, but Brunson is much closer to Lukas’s age.

2) Brunson is much cheaper, and will likely remain much cheaper on his next contract. In a vacuum, I guess that’s not a huge deal, but..

3) FVV’s contract virtually guarantees him a starting role, while I’m personally hoping Brunson can become a first guard off the bench (still playing heavy minutes) type. Now, if the GOAL is to add another starting guard who can handle and score, and the Kemba stuff gives us reason to suspect they like that idea, then sure, FVV bumps the plan forward significantly. But, whose spot does he take? Does he replace Richardson? Hmmm...maybe. Does he replace Kleber or DFS, effectively making Luka a SF? Defensively, I’m not sure I like that plan so much, though I definitely like having the OPTION of playing that way.

Like I said, this idea is so out of left field I’m just slow to wrap my mind around it. The offense would certainly be better, and this would take care of any secondary playmaking issues the team has suffered, for sure.

I feel like there is a lot of underselling of FVV right now.  Brunson will never become FVV.  He is not a good defender and very likely never will be.  FVV is an elite perimeter defender and has been since day 1.  He is not tall but due to his strength and instincts he can guard 2s and some 3s in addition to 1s.  His offensive strengths are well known.  He would be our third star and a perfect fit with Luka and KP.  There would be no doubt he starts.  FVV and JRich would probably be the best perimeter defensive combo in the league.  You could totally play them with KP/Maxi/Luka.  That would be contender lineup in my mind.  If all it takes is Brunson and a first (plus salary filler) I would pull that trigger immediately.
