So the KP + Gobert dream wasn't just stupid as a fit...
Stupid to think we could get Gobert from Utah... yes But stupid from a Basketball standpoint - NOT EVEN!

Based on what, the fact that Carlisle is trying this once, when 5 of the team's top 9 players are unavailable? That's what you're pointing to as a justification of spending 30% of the salary cap on a second center? I'd call that a stretch.

Looks like DAL isn't going to be able to "ease" KP back into the rotation.
Hope he's put in the treadmill time.

WCS is nimbler than he looks, he even said himself he thinks of himself as a SF that's playing as a big because that's what he's asked to do. WCS like Maxi and Powell can rotate to the perimeter. I expect KP to be guarding the paint with Willie helping on the weak side. WCS + KP to me does not mean Rick is moving KP to PF to play alongside a traditional center. To me what it indicates is that the Mavs don't really have a traditional center outside of Boban. WCS, Maxi, Powell and KP are all hybrid PF/C's, at least defensively. I still believe Rick wants KP to play that center spot so to me it just shows that our bigs are versatile.

I TOLD you the key was for the Mavs to run two centers out there at the same time!!!

I think as @"dirkfansince1998" has been harping, the D was partly a scheme issue.
With Jamal Mosley moving out of the D coordinator position and Guthrie coming over from UTA and taking over that role I think is part of the reason we have seen such an improvement.

Josh Green is a top 5 Mavs player...

Better individual defenders certainly don´t hurt but looking at guys like THJ it is pretty obvious that the new scheme is helping the players. Last year THJ looked like the worst team defender on the roster. This year he is getting steals, deflecting passes and playing good on ball D. As a former Jazz guy Guthrie should know how to take advantage of a big and mobile rim protector like KP. Even more in combination with another big that can at least somewhat defend on the perimeter. The Gobert-Favors combination lead to the best defensive rating in the league. Will be interesting to see if he can replicate it with KP/WCS/Kleber/Powell. Todays performance was really promising. Being able to shut down the paint is a game changer. Hornets were hopeless when they couldn´t make a 3. |
