Mavs did not do right by the '11 team
Anything else that feeds into this PERCEPTION of Dallas as a negative destination among players is not a bad example, no matter how much we disagree with it logically:
No matter how much we know about the Barnes trade, it got blasted on SportsCenter and there are more players who build their perception based on that presentation of the game rather than asking: Barnes what happened and how did you feel?
DSJ could feel like he got screwed by being sent to NY (after the fact) and is salty toward Rick/MBT
Matthews, DAJ (personal feelings of justification aside), and Barnes are among the majority of FA signings by Dallas who did not finish their contracts here.
This helps explain part of the issues Dallas has among Free Agent players who consistently pick other teams instead of Dallas.
I think it´s as simple as the MBT has been aimless and poor for a decade.
We haven´t won a play-off series in a decade (starting from the highest point possible: the champions), which puts us firmly in the "top" seven teams of teams in the league with such a streak.
We are not Knicks, Kings or Hornets bad, but the performance has also not been anywhere near a top 10 franchise level, where you´d comfortably commit yourself for 3-4 years as an elite player.
1. We never valued the draft.
2. We never asset managed (selling capspace/acquiring picks).
3. We never convinced free agents in meetings.
4. Whenever the national media talked about the Mavs the message was: Carlisle has a bunch of misfits overachieving again. They finished 44-38. 44 overachieving wins are worse than 44 underachieving wins. Overachieving means the talent isn´t even worth 0.500.
So if you are a player, you ask yourself: What is this FO actually good at. Do they have a long-term plan.
You need to build a smart reputation as a front office to be a draw an elite player. That´s why players follow around Riley, West, Morey and to a lesser extent Ainge or Ujiri.
The Mavs are just starting to rebuild that reputation amongst agents and players again. Therefore the last two off-seasons were a step in the right direction. At least there (seemingly) is a recognizable long-term project plan in place now.....
....and of course LUKA DONCIC.

In what world does Dallas do what Boston does? Mavs never traded their core franchise player, even when it was the best move. Unlike Ainge.
Mavs do trade role players, but what franchise doesn't?

Barnes trade gave Mavs a very bad PR.
And there are other pieces to the conversation.
LeBron had no idea what he was talking about.
LeBron was being a hypocrite because he has actually been part of the decision making process that's sent guys packing from his teams.
A conversation can be more multifaceted than just, "are the Mavs perceived to be ruthless, or not".

He wants to be the GOAT. He knows that he can't be the GOAT because he had to manufacture the perfect situation for him by creating a super team not 1, not 2, BUT 3 times in order to win anything.
He despises that he's seen as a ring chasing mercenary, even if he's such a great player. The narrative of players not being able to do whatever they want to do with no consequences is the sole reason in Lebron's head why he isn't seen as the undisputed GOAT.
So what does Lebron do when he sees the perfect opportunity to justify his behavior? He takes it. Frames it like "SEE?? IM...er I mean PLAYERS HAVE TO DO WHATEVER IS BEST FOR THEM. LOOK HOW RUTHLESS THESE TEAMS ARE." Even though Barnes DID have knowledge of a trade, and him playing was HIS choice. Facts don't matter to Lebron's narrative.
It's unfortunate that I think after Lebron retires, he won't just go away. He is probably the biggest primadonna to ever enter sports as a whole. And that's saying something.

There may be a negative perception around players like DAJ, Rondo, DS jr etc. Even Wright who we just did right by sending him to his old coach. We shouldn’t care what players like that think. I don’t want any player that thinks they’re bigger than the team. Let all these guys go join LeBeijing and Rich Paul
It’s the decent guys whose perception matters. We did right by Wes(got him more $ after DAJ showed his true colors). Bird box was taken care of. All our organizational soldiers taken care of. Seth Curry just went to an ideal situation. Delonte West and guys like that we always look after
Crowder and Powell have some of the biggest beef, but Powell signed with us after. Crowder almost just signed with us again
Outside of Tyson Chandler I’m struggling to find any non-Rondo/DSjr type player who would have beef with us.
This is Simmons projecting his teams BS onto us. His Boston squad just had a terrible offseason and still have major issues internally. We are the opposite and have true team/org chemistry. He’s jealous

Am I missing something regarding Bill Simmons? People acting like he hates us
I mean I have never seen a media guy who talked fondly of thevMavs more than him.
Sometimes I even think we are one of his favourite teams. Huge fan of RC and mostly loves our draft picks and many of our moves.
Or there is another side I missed?

Read his retro diary about the 2011 finals. He loves Dirk and praised Cuban as an owner. This isn't a hit piece by him, just gossip he's heard.

Love that 2011 diary! I like Bill Simmons and he likes the Mavs. Pretty sure you're right about the gossip.

I couldn’t care less what DAJ feels about the Mavs
and I imagine most of the NBA doesn’t either. Heck what he did to the Mavs several years ago was as bad as any player has done in FA.

How you feel about the Mavs has no impact on what NBA players "believe/perceive".
DAJ is tight with Chris Paul who happens to be the head of the Players Association, and a charter Banana Boater.
Basically Dallas has had no respect from the current generation of NBA stars, and Paul with his Clippers were the main instigators of the DAJ stunt.
Whether mark deserves it or not, players tight with LBJ, Melo, Wade, and their followers (Paul, et al) find the Mavs laughable - or at least enjoyable to mock and diss.

I think it is more about Mark vs Klutch sports and Rich Paul. That alone takes the Mavs out of the market for a lot of free agents and leads to bad relations with the LeBron/banana boat universe. Add the Rondo drama that created beef with the Celtics bubble (media guys like KG/PP) and it is easy to see why some people think that the Mavs are not a player friendly franchise.

I’m fine with being their enemy.
I would rather be busy building a Euro pipeline. That’s where the talent is trending. Not sure what’s legal, but we need to be recruiting these guys college style. Get em early and keep building a name for ourselves that way.
Let the melo haters hate on us all they want. We are worldwide and cool with anyone who can ball

LOL, what you feel about the banana boys is irrelevant too. Wade has retired, Anthony, wasn’t he one? He’s limping to the end, Paul is bouncing around as an overpaid PG, and LeBron is one of the older players. The up and coming players don’t care about what their feelings are. DAJ is of no importance to the league, just a journeyman at this point. He doesn’t carry weight around the league.

Trade for Gobert or Tobias Harris rather than wait to see how much respect the next generation has for Dallas. Ultimately, I don't care if it is the players or just that the MBT sucks at FA...
Quit holding cap space and use it, instead of watching it diminish into vapor like the Harrison Barnes TE.

I really hate Lebron and my hate for him had more to do with him turning the nba into AAU. He is much of the reason for that.

The last time Wade and Lebron mocked and dissed a Mav, we won a championship.. so I would ask them to keep going..
