Mavs at a minimum have to find that 5th starter. They never really settled on one the entire year. Powell was a starter most of the year and I think it's reasonable to think the Mavs will not start him again with KP as KP really shined once he became the center. Rick shuffled the lineup so many times post-Powell you would have to think he wasn't really happy with any combination he tried. Lee, Curry and Kleber all had their share of starts.
Obviously in the playoffs he went with Kleber which I think was the right way to go for that time even if there was no perfect answer. In my view the Mavs need the athletic 3D wing they wanted last year.
Justin Holiday would be another good wing candidate. 31 yr old and hey he's the bro of Jrue. We know the Mavs love signing brothers of all-star players!
Holiday previously signed using the room exception (for Memphis I think?) so he's likely available for a reasonable deal. If you could get Holiday and keep Burke or get another defensive wing like DJJ or RHJ I think you'd be good to go.

Totally agree, but I'm not sure they share your assessment of what that statement means.
I believe Carlisle WANTED to start Curry, but knew he couldn't against the Clippers. The Luka/Curry/THJ/DFS/KP lineup is the one he was settling into right before the shutdown.
It's not that I don't think they want help defensively or with size. I just feel like they really want another ball handler on the court with Luka. I don't think it necessarily has to be a guard, but it's probably going to be a replacement in the lineup above for Curry, which means:
Luka/?/THJ/DFS/KP or
Luka/THJ/?/DFS/KP or
Luka/THJ/DFS/?/KP
I think guys like Crowder and Ibaka are good fits for the team to an extent, but not solutions to what I believe the Mavs think is their most glaring weakness.
Don't get me wrong - I'm sure they want a guy who's a two-way player.
We've talked about Scrhoeder recently. He could be an option. Does Vanvleet do anything for anyone?

Looking at https://www.basketball-reference.com/tea...start.html Rick was going back to experimentation-mode I thought those last few games in March including starting Lee. I don't recall if Curry was injured or not at the time.

Bubble:
Lee - hurt
Powell - hurt
Brunson - hurt
WCS - personal reasons

There are going to be some giant trades this summer. Weak draft and teams wanting to trade out of it. Warriors should get a big upgrade. Wolves could get a good player. Other teams not even on the radar could make big moves. Inlike the Mavs roster but I do worry about teams vaulting ahead in talent through big moves.

Yeah, but who knows, maybe the Mavs will make a big deal.
They do have THJ's expiring, the option to sign and trade Lee, etc.
To be clear, everything I wrote in this thread today is based on the assumption that all they do is use the MLE. They might take a bigger swing than that, but if they do, history suggests that it won't be anything any of us can see coming.
I think you guys have talked me into letting go of 2021. Outside of Giannis, I'm not sure I see the point anymore.
I think I know the answer, but this is a serious question:
Does Vanvleet do anything for anyone here?

Just found this forum. Sup
Foundation here for a 3 way swap?
Mavs get: Derrick White and Thad Young
Spurs get: Pick 18, Delon Wright and Justin Jackson
Bulls get: Pick 31 and Rudy Gay
Spurs and Bulls do it for the picks and the cap space. Mavs get an age appropriate two way guard to add to our core without sacrificing much 2021 room. Plus mavs get another big/wing as insurance for KP. Offer up the full MLE to Derrick Jones Jr and let’s go. Youth plus keep Hardaway and all our best players

No on VanFleet, I think he is a system guy, although solid a system that excels in what Toronto asks him to do. We can do better than VanFleet and he will not make us better

Thad Young has grown on me a bit. White would be a more consistent Burke. AND the Mavs get off the Wright contract. So it's an all around win.
So super solid trade for the Mavs. I don't think the Bulls would be happy to get 34 year Gay and a 2nd rounder for just Thad Young, especially since they're trying to rebuild. Spurs get a lot of assets in return but I doubt they'd ever deal with us unless it was for more drastic measures.
I do feel like the Mavs could do more with their 2 picks this year than just White and Young though...

The final possession of the Raptors season should deter any interest in VanVleet, especially for the contract he'l command.

That possession was bad, but he wouldn't be in that role here. Not pounding the Vanvleet drum, just saying.

He's also 6"0'. Just keep Brunson for pennies on the dollar to approximate what he'd give you.

I agree that his size is a problem, but vehemently disagree that he wouldn't give you anything more than Brunson. He can play on ball or off, is a fearless catch and shoot guy and tries his ass off on the defensive end.
I do agree that he's about to be overpaid.

Luka is around 32 to 36 minutes per game. max in the playoffs. That is a huge difference.
So Usage Rate is just that a "rate"....meaning that it is about percentage of available plays "while the player is on the court." So MJ playing more minutes does NOT increase his usage rate.

Here is the definition of usage rate by the NBA:
Usage rate, a.k.a., usage percentage is an estimate of the percentage of team plays used by a player while he was on the floor.
The key word is while he is on the floor. My point is we are using Luka at a rate equal to Jordan in fewer minutes played than Jordan. Which means Luka is having to do as much in less amount of time. We need Luka to be able to match Jordans usage rate and time on the court.
Remember the Bulls offense did not always run through Michael, it ran through Scottie. Michael could post up and not have to facilitate because he had Pippen.
Luka needs a Pippen, someone that can make him not have to do as much or work as hard.
