Where can we get some of these mid players that other teams are willing to pay unprotected picks for? This seems to be the key to team building right now.

On top of the picks and money, LA also had to let the entire team walk in FA to make this happen.

Yeah, like...I know half the city and all of the team's front office were probably ready to turn the page on LeBron, so I get it, but...functionally, on the court, it's a pretty big hole they can't fill now. Lets see what else they have in store. With no draft assets and time with cap space, they need to be very aggressive now. FA is probably dried up, but this is the time it appears. So Kessler, Grimes and Mamu (& Carr). Who are going to be their defenders?

Stuck with Gafford and PJ would piss me off, but some people think it's no big deal. John Collins is a PJ tiered forward/player and is now making 5 mil less per year.

John Collins is no where PJ territory... PJ was a Finals team starter.
Collins plays always in a no where team. No defense. Low basketball IQ. Bad attitude.

I disagree that Collins is that close to PJW as an overall player, but I will say that he's a forward WHO CAN SHOOT, which is what 90% of teams are out there needing, including the Mavericks, so...functionally, I find myself agreeing with your point.

John Collins career 36.9% on 2.9 3PT attempts per game.
PJ Washington career 35.4% on 4.8 3PT attempts per game. One is labeled a shooter the other is labeled a terrible one.

So Kessler passed on a 4 year 140 million dollar contract, which he said he was unhappy about, to sign a contract with the Lakers for 4 years 130 million? Make it make sense!

Idk, man...the numbers do move the needle (on my perception of Collins, at least). I definitely don't want to get lumped in with the PJW haters - I've always been his biggest fan here, including being one of only 2-3 people who even wanted him here. Mostly, my issue with him here in Dallas these days is his fit with Flagg, though I'm willing to see what May does with that. I've always maintained that he's a valuable player, and I for sure think he's better than Collins.

Lakers just got Sandro Mamukelashvili, Grimes and Sexton too

Sexton to the Lakers. Yeesh. Flood gates opened for them today. Def woulda liked him on the Mavs, but I guess the amazing Marcus Sasser will do.

These moves all scream Luka. Seems like he might be the new LeGM.

@KeithSmithNBA
Piecing together all of the Los Angeles Lakers deals: Walker Kessler, Quentin Grimes and Sandro Mamukelashvili will all go into the Lakers cap space. Collin Sexton will come in via the Room Exception. LA probably needs to get off a contract somewhere by my count, but this is the Lakers offseason wrapped up.
07-01-2026, 11:13 AM
Sexton for 2/19 is pretty damn great value imo.

OTOH, I don't get the allure of LAL, other than the lingering "Showtime" pantina and NBA's commitment to having a high visibility team in the #2 TV market. IMO, living in the city is a daily PITA, even if you are a young multi-millionaire. But I'm old so what do I know.
