It just beat the Spurs four times in five tries despite spotting a double-digit lead to San Antonio in the first quarter of all five games. The Knick who impressed me the most in the Finals, vs my expectations, was not Brunson. It was Mike Brown. I had thought he was mostly a meh coach who got lots of chances because of his history as a SA assistant, and then would get fired when each place figured it out.

But he made some really inspired adjustments in the playoffs, both of them to unlock the offense. Against ATL iirc, he went to KAT as the offensive hub which let Brunson play off the ball. Against PHI too. To some degree KAT was the focal point, doing the passing, more than Brunson.

In the Finals, in games 1-2, Brunson was not that good on offense. Somehow they won anyhow, but he was being overwhelmed and worn down by the SA defense pounding on him all the way up the court, and his offense was very subpar. So Brown took him off being the guy pushing the ball all the time, mainly with Alvarado, and it let Brunson have the energy to score in buckets again later in the series. I think that was a somewhat minor tweak that was very very sharp, and made a big difference.

I was not a fan of the Knicks earlier in year. Thought they were too Brunson dependent.

I thought Brown has always been a good coach but was not the guy to make a good team great. Whether I was wrong or just wrong this year doesn’t matter.

I tend to agree. Mike Brown has coached some pretty good teams before, and he still got fired.  Lakers, Cavs (he was COY and won 66 games in 2009 and led them to the Finals before being swept by the Spurs).  He did a good job of turning a moribund Kings team around, made the playoffs for the first time in 17 years, and won his 2nd COY award. This year's Knicks team had some luck involved in their romp to the title. Atlanta was the only team to beat them twice, but they got on their roll right after that series and swept an injured Embiid led Philly team and Cleveland. I guess what I'm trying to say is they had an easier path to the Finals than the young Spurs, who knocked off the champs and really should have beaten the Knicks if it wasn't for bad game management, key turnovers, and Mitch Johnson's decision-making regarding playing De'Aaron Fox (who was brutal) more minutes than Harper. Johnson was totally outcoached by Brown. However, I give them credit for being connected, and they went on and had a historic playoff.

In 2023, Kings have their best season in 18 years (48 wins + playoffs). In 2026, Knicks have their best season in 53 years (first NBA title since 1973).
