I think the Mavs should just chill for now.
You'll have the $20.8 million trade exception in the offseason.
You'll have the full MLE (around $15 million in the offseason).
You'll have two first rd picks.
You are tanking right now. I don't really see the need to make an addition before tomorrow. When you finally get some money in your bank account, no need to hurry up and spend it.

If you're talking about the idea of exchanging guys like Gafford for better fitting equivalents, I agree. There's some breathing room now to wait and get more clarity on what will fit vs. what won't.
The thing I would be on the lookout for tonight and tomorrow is the chance to add more sub-25 year old prospects. They won't hurt the tank, and some contender's desperation might afford you the opportunity to add another Max Christie level guy, possibly.

For sure. Now you can be opportunisitic.
I still don't want to trade future draft capital unless it's a no brainer.

Bobby Karalla: "You want to be in the position when that next star becomes available, you have stuff you can trade. Now they have 4 1st rd picks (?) they can trade if such a guy becomes available."

What people seem to be missing out on is that the table is far better-set for a new GM now. Presti, can we interest you...?

Without a trade and assuming you bring back RFA Branham (and sign Cisse and Nembhard to multi-year standard contracts, here is what you have next season besides the two picks:
Lively/Gafford/Cisse
Flagg/Naji
PJ/Klay/Martin
Christie/Branham
Irving/Johnson/Nembhard
That's 13 and you have two first rounders. UFA's Powell, Bagley and Williams were not retained in this assumption. If we presume we want to compete next season, what hole do we want to fill (knowing we will fill at least one hold in the draft).

Mavs need a young PG (hopefully with their top 10 pick)
and a starting SF
Dont repeat the same mistakes from last offseason of penciling PJ/Flagg as a SF and Kyrie as the only true PG. I'd still shop PJ for a perimeter player. I think he probably needs to rehab his value next season. Might be a better trade candidate next deadline.

Yeah, I was not on the "wait for a GM" to make a move bandwagon. Part of why I've held out hope for an AD deal is I thought clearing the decks (without doing harm) made good sense.
If we are being honest, this deal mainly cleared the decks. The picks are kind of meh (basically fake firsts). The "young players" part aren't exactly sure-fire prospects. This was about getting under the tax now and financial flexibility going forward.

PG with size. I still think Kyrie is better playing off ball. A younger forward that can shoot. Ideally both guys being good defenders.

I'd love to get some insight into Luka's plans for 2028
If the Mavs have some intel that says he's going to opt out and wants to come back to Dallas - you keep that option available.
If they could somehow luck into a Top 5 pick this year, tread water next year with what still could be a playoff roster if healthy, sign Luka in 2028 and on top of that get a depleted Lakers team 1st rounder in 2029....OH MY!!
2027 - not including your two 1st rounders - isn't terrible. If they could land Boozer in the draft at PF....goose bumps
Kyrie/Nembhard
Max/Klay/AJ
Flagg/Naji
PJ/Martin
Lively/Gafford/Cisse

MEH
Much rather have Cooper Flagg as the #1 guy leading the franchise.
Luka will have a great career like James Harden. He's not a top 5-10 all time type player. That much is clear to me. That's the only way I could put with that horrible playing style of hogging the ball all game, chasing triple doubles, not ever moving off ball, never running back on defense.

No to a Luka return. This is Flagg's franchise going forward. I love Luka and wish him the best, but that ship has sailed.

Toronto traded Agbaji to the Nets and received CP3 from Clippers. Paid 1 SRP to Nets

Well I looked briefly at the Reddit Wizards board. They are pretty pumped.

[Cowley] Ayo Dosunmu, and newly-acquired guards Collin Sexton and Anfernee Simons are still trade candidates, per source. The Bulls still feel like they have a lot of work to do ... now and carrying on into July.

I have no idea why Toronto added CP3 to their Agbaji dumping deal, as there are reports they don't expect him to report. Looks like a favor to Clippers, who were looking to clear a roster spot for their 2-way guy and save some money by dumping CP3 for nothing.

[Charania] The Raptors will not require Chris Paul to report to the team and could still discuss trades involving him over the next day. Toronto is now it of the tax. Brooklyn picks up an asset and cash to cover Agbaji's salary. The Clippers clear a roster spot and save $7 million in tax.
Gonna be crazy if CP3's career ends after he was sent home by the Clippers.

I wonder if we're still too good to tank properly - especially if Kai comes back later this month.
