I think signing the QO also gives him a no-trade clause - essentially the power to veto any destination he doesn’t like. Or that he thinks won’t give him the contract he wants. Players who have an outsized opinion of their value are really hard for front offices to deal with. I kinda think Nico did the right thing by trading him.

You could say that trade cost us OMax (no great loss) but in a hard cap world the buyout might come back to byte us in the assets.

It could be that the deal was atrocious, but at this point I still feel some hope that Martin will be a key contributor this year. He's probably the best POA defender on the team, currently, and while it might not be easy to envision a regular rotation spot for him, I'd have absolutely no qualms about him playing if an injury or unexpected ordering of the depth chart occurred. Point being, I still think there's a chance Martin will actually perform in the role they wanted to pay Grimes to play. If Martin ends up being the end-of-bench ballast people assume he will be, then yes, he's an expensive way to fill the roster and they'd probably have been better off just letting Grimes expire.

I agree with this. Martin was coming off an injury and coming into a new system. This is his first training camp with the Mavs. Plus, there's a new offense that might put him on a more level playing field with teammates. You give Martin a chance. By February, you'll know what you have for better or worse.

What annoyed me about Martin was, he quit looking at the basket when he had the ball in his hands. I'm all for being a willing passer, but a player also has to be a threat to shoot, and at a high enough level so that the other team will have to guard you. Don't know what was up with that.

I just don't know how they fit everyone in when healthy. It is a deep roster with mostly good NBA players. Injuries will make everyone fit at times. Although when healthy, it will be real interesting how they fit everyone together. I am for lower minutes to start the season, so maybe you can play a 10 man roation. Although even with that it will be really tight.

Christian Wood is still available.

At no time did he redeem himself when arriving at a new team... and he was generally young and healthy through most of them. The fans were robbed. Not because of his play, but because we never even got good rumors! |
